Blizzard wins Fantasy Bowl XIII 59-27 over Mud

Griffins-Wildcats finish 1-2 in points for 2nd consecutive year; Violence wins consolation points award; MER & NDV tie for lowest points

None of the top 5 teams (pts.) made the playoffs this year

The Syracuse Blizzard captured the franchise’s second league championship with a 59-27 win over the Graynbald Mud in Fantasy Bowl XIII. The Richmond Raptors won 3rd place with a tight 63-60 win over the Dallas Armadillos. In the consolation bracket, the Philadelphia Griffins stopped the Boston Wildcats’ streak of 100+ point games with one of their own, easily ousting the Wildcats 109-61.

Philadelphia took the points championship with 1,144 points overall, second highest in league history (Griffins scored 1,209 in 1998). Boston was runner-up in overall points with 1,037. It’s the 3rd time in league history with two teams breaking 1000 points in a season.

This is also the second consecutive year the Griffins-Wildcats finished 1-2 in points, and the third time overall (also 1995). Additionally, in both 1997 and 2000, it was Wildcats #1 and Griffins #2 in total points. In fact, since 1994, either the Griffins or Wildcats have made an appearance in the top 2 in overall points every single year.

The consolation points award goes to the newest owners in the league — the Happy Valley Violence, who finished 3rd overall in points. HVV edged the Keystone Longfellows by ONE SINGLE POINT: 953-952 to grab the season’s final award. The Orange County Beach Dudes finished a close 5th in overall points at 947. Dan’s last-minute benching of Tom Brady (9 pts.) in favor of Josh McCown (-1 pts.) cost the Dudes the consolation points award.

Note the oddity in this fact: the 5 top scoring teams on the season failed to make the top-tier playoffs.

After 16 consecutive losses, the New Denver 2x4s capture the Official Cellar Dwellar title, losing 34-25 to the Miami Muffdivers. The 2x4s also slipped into a last-place tie with the Mercer Mustangs in overall points. Both teams finished with 526.

Points trivia:
  • Philadelphia’s total at QB this year (291) is highest in league history. Previous high at QB position was Wisconsin’s 1998 total of 287 points (primarily Steve Young).
  • Philadelphia Griffins finished 2nd behind Graynbald for total points at RB this year: 449 to 448.
  • The high points at WR this year — Miami, with 487 points — is only the second time in league history the top team WRs have outscored the top team RBs. In 1995, Griffins’ WRs (primarily Isaac Bruce, Herman Moore and Carl Pickins) outscored the Wildcat’s RBs (Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Rodney Hampton, and 5 weeks of Curtis Martin in his rookie season) 556 to 458.

New Denver 2x4s are sawdust … welcome the New Chester Thorobreds

The New Denver 2x4s, coming off the worst season of any team in FFL history (0-16), have changed the franchise name to the New Chester Thorobreds. Co-owner Mike White announced the new team name Monday, noting the new franchise name is simply studs of a different color. The new name also reflects the new location of co-owner Rich Sladic, who has moved the corporate offices for his half of the franchise to Winchester, KY.

Scalped: Mud no longer gray/bald

Great GraynBald grapple with gut wrenching name change!

In this day and age of quick fix, cosmetic surgery, botox and tummy tucks, the GraynBald Mud are undergoing an extreme makeover moment.  In an effort to boost self confidence, they will give up their non-traditional nomenclature and go with the ‘old school’ land grab identification technique.

The GraynBald Mud will now be christened the MASS-ILL Mud!

When asked for a comment the prematurely “Gray” Ron Feldman said that his efforts to lure strange women into his studio apartment were curtailed when he revealed his fantasy football team name.  He believes the new name and increased attention to fantasy football minutia will improve his women wooing efforts.

Several attempts were made to contact the “Baldish” Greg MacInnis, however it was believed that he is busy producing more Irish Catholic children and was unreachable for comment.  So the GraynBald Mud are no more and will fade into football history along with the Houston Oilers, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Colts and Montreal Alouettes.  And somewhere the great George Halas is rolling over in his grave.  We’re all feeling some mass ill indeed…

P.S. upon further review the Alouettes are still playing somewhere up north, ay.

Blizzard, Raptors and Mud grab division titles; Dallas gets wildcard

Griffins, Violence, Wildcats and Froglickers in consol. bracket

The final week of the fantasy league’s regular season went right down to the wire, with the Monday night NFL game determining all playoff spots with one exception: the Syracuse Blizzard, with a 34-27 win over the Froglickers, clinched the Cappelletti Division after the Sunday games.

Richmond clinches the Engle division by virtue of the 3rd tiebreaker. Both teams finished 10-4, split their two head-to-head games, and both have the same division record. Richmond wins the division by 5 points. Dallas gets the wildcard slot.

Graynbald clinched the Paterno division with a win over Mercer 64-50, and will be the top seed in the playoffs and will face Dallas in the first round. Syracuse and Richmond will face off in the other playoff game.

The two teams out of the playoffs are the teams who were 1-2 in total points last week. Philadelphia lost to Orange Co. 72-50, and Happy Valley lost to Boston 102-38. PHI gets the top seed in the consolation bracket, and will play the fourth-seeded Froglickers. HVV gets the second seed in the consolation bracket, and will play (for the second week in a row), the third-seeded Wildcats.

The resurgent Boston team scored over 100 points for the second consecutive week, matching a feat done only once before in league history — the Griffins posted back-to-back 100 point weeks in Weeks 13 and 14 of 1998. Boston’s late surge has also pushed the team to 2nd in overall points.

The teams currently in 1st, 2nd, and 4th in overall points all missed the playoffs this year.

Week 13 Notes

All divisions up for grabs

With the final week of the regular season upon us, no team has yet clinched a division title. Six teams can be 10-game winners, but only 4 of those will make the Fantasy Bowl playoffs. Surprisingly, none of these division contenders are playing one another the final week.

  • Paterno Division: GBM (9-2-2) leads PHI (9-3-1) by one-half game. The Mud also hold the tiebreaker over the Griffins, with a win and a tie in their two meetings this season. GBM plays MER the final week, and PHI plays OCD. If both teams win, they are both in the playoffs. The runner-up here has a strong edge in wild card tiebreakers by virtue of having fewer losses.
  • Cappelletti Division: SYR (9-4) and HVV (9-4) are tied. The Blizzard beat the Violence in both their meetings this year, so SYR holds the tiebreaker. HVV plays BOS the final week, while SYR plays FFL.
  • Engle Division: RMD (9-4) and DAL (9-4) are tied, and the teams split their two games this year. Both teams have the same division record (4-1) and RMD has a slim 8-point lead in overall points. The Armadillos play NDV the final week, and the Raptors play MIA.

For the consolation bracket, two of the teams noted above will be in. They will be joined by two other teams. Three teams have a decent shot at the two remaining slots:
FFL (6-6-1), KEY (6-7), and BOS (6-7).
Without going into all the obscure tiebreaker possibilities, it appears three other teams are still not mathematically eliminated: BOB (5-8), MIA (5-8), and OCD (5-8).

Yes, that’s correct. There are currently no teams in the league with either 8 or 7 wins.

Many records set or tied

New Denver is one loss away from a dubious distinction: the first winless season in league history. The Studs this week became the first team in league history to lose 13 games in a season. NDV also set the league’s longest losing streak, eclipsing Richmond’s 12-game losing streak in 1998. In NDV’s 13th loss, they scored 48 points (their 2nd highest score of the year) but ran up against a BOS Wildcat team that scored 127.

The Wildcats set the league record for points by 3 starting receivers: 72 points from Chad Johnson, Joe Horn and Drew Bennett. This bests the previous record held by the (NY) Griffins, who scored 61 points in Week 5 of 1995 (Isaac Bruce, Carl Pickens, and Joey Galloway).

Keystone also set a league record this week. Donovan McNabb’s 37-point performance is the new all-time high individual QB performance. The previous record was set just 5 weeks ago when the Griffin’s Peyton Manning tallied 36 points.

Syracuse also set a league record this week for total points from two running backs. Curtis Martin and Julius Jones combined for 58 points, shattering the old mark held by the Wisconsin Cheeseheads (now FFL) when Errict Rhett and Emmitt Smith combined to score 49 points in Week 1 in 1995. Emmitt totalled 282 points alone in 1995.

Miami tied the league’s record high for a kicker, with John Kasay’s 23 points matching two previous efforts: KEY’s Olindo Mare in 1999 (wk6) and GBM’s Jeff Wilkins in 2000 (wk5).

Boston’s 127 points this week is third-highest in league history, and the Wildcats now own the 3 highest weekly scores of all time.

Week 11 Notes

Important Notes

  1. Ying will be in L.A. Nov. 22 through 29 and won’t be updating the web site during that period, so any transactions made those days, week 11 finals, stats, standings, and week 12 lineups won’t be posted until Tuesday (Nov. 30) after the week 12 games are over. I will have cell phone and limited access to email while I’m away.
  2. There are Thursday games on Thanksgiving (Bear, Colts, Cowboys and Lions). If you have players on those teams that you plan to start, lineups should be submitted before Thursday (Nov. 24) kickoff. Changes not involving players from those 4 teams can be made by resubmitting a lineup up until Sunday kickoff.
  3. When any owner submits a lineup or transaction, please wait until the process is complete and you get the “form submitted” confirmation page. (ie: don’t close your browser window until you see the confirmation page). You will also get a copy of the e-mail message, provided you entered your correct email address when making the transaction/lineup.

Harrison dealt at deadline

The Dallas Armadillos swung a deadline deal with Oregon, acquiring WR Marvin Harrison for the Armadillos’ playoff run. Dallas gives up two draft picks (2005-1st; 2006-2nd) for the Colts receiver.

Graynbald and Boston also finalized a last-minute deal. Graynbald gets RB Derrick Blaylock as insurance to backup Priest Holmes, as also gets the Jets QB tandem of Chad Pennington and Quincy Carter. Boston, well out of the playoff hunt, puts more options on the table for 2005 by acquiring QB Eli Manning and RB Marcel Shipp.

Week 8 Notes

Week 8 saw the fall of two records in our league. Griffins quarterback Payton Manning’s 36-point week breaks the previous high points for a single week at QB, a record formerly held by the Muffdivers, when Tommy Maddox score 33 points in Week 10 of 2002.

The defending champion Big Bang also broke the league record for points from 4 starting receivers. Rod Smith, Marvin Harrison, David Givens and Antonio Gates racked up 74 points, besting a record held since Week 6 of 1996 when the old Wisconsin Cheeseheads posted 69 points with 4 starting receivers (Antonio Freeman-23, Shawn Jefferson-17, Muhsin Muhammad-0, and Shannon Sharpe-29).

Finally — and I’m not sure if this is a record but I don’t recall it ever happening in the league — the Mercer Mustangs last week had ZERO points from all of their positions, both starters and bench, except for the kickers (Vanderjagt started and scored 4, Lindell on the bench scored 8).

Week 3 Notes

Jerry Rice dropped; Houshmandzadeh added

This might be an historic first for our league (if/when I have the free time I’ll look it up), but WR Jerry Rice was dropped this week. I don’t think that’s ever happened, and I also believe he’s always been either protected or drafted. If correct, he’d have been on a fantasy roster in our league continuously for over 12 years. In any case, the 2-1 OC Dudes dropped Rice to add Bengal WR TJ Houshmandzadeh. The Dudes weren’t the only team interested in Houshmandzadeh, though. PHI Griffins owner Nick Fisher called the FFL web desk to request the transaction over the phone, but this editor was amused at the Griffins owner’s attempts at pronouncing the player’s name. “I think it begins with an H,” he said.

Did you notice …

Two teams from last year’s Fantasy Bowl Playoffs have started the year 0-3. The reason the Big Bang are 0-3 is that every team this year is gunning for the defending champs. Banger’s had the most points (189) scored against him through the first three weeks. It’s not hard to figure out why New Denver is 0-3. The Studs are dead last in overall points (80) and the only team not to break triple digits through the first 3 weeks …… There are now 10 players on IR in the fantasy league. That might be a record …… Dallas and Richmond are the only teams without a blemish on their record, both at 3-0.

Projected Standings

Projected Standings for the Year

A few owners have asked me about the projected standings I usually post. I didn’t have time to input our scoring rules and stats into the program this year, so the numbers are inflated (using the program’s default scoring system). But, for shits and grins, here are the 2004 projections, along with 2003 projections and 2003 actual totals.
