The northeast’s un-welcomed preview of winter this past weekend was apparently just what the Blizzard needed, as Syracuse snapped their losing streak with their first win of the year — a 62-15 thumping of the toothless Mud.

Philadelphia lost it’s first game of the year, dropping to 4-1-1 after a 68-34 loss at the hands of the Froglickers, who move into first place in the Cappelletti division with a 5-1 record.

The only remaining zeros in the W-L column are found in the Paterno division, where the Beach Dudes continue to roll at 6-0, while the Thorobreds remain the league’s only winless team at 0-6. OCD beat NCT 84-27. And after a rollercoaster first 4 weeks, the Wildcats have their first winning streak of the year and posted the week’s highest score with a 98-61 win over Mercer.

And we have a rare in-season trade that didn’t happen the day before the trade deadline. The Longfellows and Raptors traded backup QBs, with Eli Manning headed to Keystone and Kyle Orton going to the Burgh.

The Angels aren’t the only hot team in Southern California — the Orange County Beach Dudes are the only team with 5 wins through the first 5 weeks, following a 49-38 win over Dallas. Jacksonville’s late disciplinary-related benching of WR Mike Sims-Walker likely cost Philadelphia it’s 5th win, but the Griffins remain undefeated after battling Mercer to a 63-63 tie. The Froglickers have the league’s 3rd-best record at 4-1, while MassIll posted the high score of the week in a 74-63 win over Happy Valley to up their record to 3-2.

But the real eye-popping stat this week lies in the Engle Division, where the lowest-scoring team in the league through 5 weeks — the Big Oregon Bang — leads the division with a 3-2 record.

Mercer, Philadelphia, and Orange County remain the three undefeated teams after 3 weeks. The Griffins knocked off the previously-unbeaten Armadillos handily, 70-25. Mercer got negative points from golden boy Drew Brees, but still hung on for a 46-45 win over Keystone. The Dudes sent Syracuse to 0-3 by a 54-40 score.

Philadelphia and Mercer are on an early roll, both 2-0 and both jumping out to big wins in Week 2. The Griffins demolished the defending champs with a 92-25 thumping of the Wildcats, ending Boston’s 10-game winning streak. Mercer squished the Froglickers 90-58. The Beach Dudes and the Armadillos are also both 2-0.

Week 1 of the 2009 season is in the books, and 2008’s two top-scoring fantasy players — QB Drew Brees and RB Adrian Peterson — picked up right where they left off in 2008. Peterson’s 3 TD, 180-yard performance was good for 35 points and propelled the Orange County Beach Dudes to Week One’s highest score in a 77-47 win over the Richburgh Raptors.  Brees’ 6 TD, 358-yard performance was good for 34 points and lead the Mercer Mustangs in a 58-56 win over Miami.

Also picking up where they left off in 2008 were the Boston Wildcats. The defending champions scored a 55-50 win over the MassIll Mud. Going back to last season, it’s the Wildcats’ 10th consecutive win.

We’re still waiting on the Miami Muffdivers to come up for air long enough to send us a roster of protected players. In the meantime, here are some choice nuggets overheard on Protection Sunday:

• “I haven’t had a chance to do anything with FFL yet, so my strategy for this year will be to put as little time in as possible, it certainly can’t be any worse than in prior years!!”
• “Dallas Armadillos trade our 9th round pick this year to the Philadelphia Griffins. Many other teams are giving to the Philly Cause this year and Dallas wants to contribute as well.”
• “How can a team trade away Donovan McNabb, DeAngelo Williams, Ryan Grant AND Reggie Wayne in the same day? That could be a championship team right there.”

PHI Griffins propose:

A player may only be protected three consecutive seasons by a single team, with the two exceptions noted below.
(In practice, this will limit NFL players to no more than 4 consecutive seasons on a fantasy team, with the following 2 exceptions:)

A) A “drafted” NFL rookie may be protected four consecutive seasons.
(In practice, this means when you draft an NFL rookie, you could keep him on your fantasy team for five consecutive seasons).

B) Each fantasy team gets one “franchise player” designation that they may apply to one player. This player is exempt from the aforementioned consecutive season limit. Teams may apply their one franchise player designation to the same player in consecutive years, without limit.
(In practice, this means ONE player can be protected in unlimited consecutive seasons by repeatedly using your one franchise player designation).

Nick proposes that players protected this year be considered as year one. Also, players that were drafted as rookies in 2008 and are protected this year by the original drafting team are eligible for exception A.

We are changing the draft time again as a majority of owners have either a) expressed interest in moving the draft to noon; or b) expressed that they don’t really give a you-know-what.

While we have all been enjoying our summers and not paying attention to football, the 2009 season of the National Football League is fast approach. Thursday, Sept. 10 will be the first game of the season (Titans vs. Steelers). The FFL draft is therefore scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 5 — but some owners would like to change the draft to Sunday again this year to avoid conflicts. Leave your thoughts in the comments section.

The draft lottery was held July 4 at the Fisher summer open house. Congratulations (again) to the Syracuse Blizzard for winning the first pick in the draft.

The first 8 picks of the 2009 FFL draft will go in this order:
