Boston beats Dallas by 16 for Points Championship

Boston did not repeat as Fantasy Bowl champions, but the Wildcats will bring home a trophy in the 2011 season: points champions. Boston held on to finish 16 points ahead of Dallas. The Wildcats finish with 1,057 points, and the Armadillos finish 2nd with 1,041 points. Boston held the top points spot for 15 weeks this season (all but weeks 1 and 10).

Philadelphia maintains it’s streak of finishing in the money EVERY season, now 20 years and counting. The Griffins win high points for non-playoff teams, finishing with 1,002. It’s only the second time in league history that 3 teams have finished above 1,000 points in the same season. (In 2002, KEY had 1,032; the Griffins had 1,010; and the Mud had 1,002.)

The highest scoring team of week 17 also edged into the money: the Froglickers win 2nd overall points of non-playoff teams. FFL edges Mercer by 3 points for the final award. FFL scored 94 points to finish with 938 points, while MER scored 82 to finish at 935.

Blizzard defeats Violence 59-54 in Fantasy Bowl XX; Boston leads in Points Race

For the second consecutive week, the Syracuse Blizzard pulled off a Monday night, come-from-behind victory. Roddy White’s 8-point effort capped this week’s comeback as  Syracuse captured the franchise’s 3rd Fantasy Bowl championship with a 59-54 win over the Happy Valley Violence. The quarterbacks lead the scoring for both teams: SYR’s Aaron Rodgers had the high score with 25 points, while HVV’s Matthew Stafford notched a team-high 23 points for Happy Valley.

The consolation game was also a tight contest with a come-from-behind victory. The Dallas Armadillos rallied behind 4 players in the Monday night game to beat the Boston Wildcats 76-73 and capture the 3rd-place game. The quarterbacks also lead the scoring for both teams in this game, with DAL’s Matt Ryan notching a 15-point effort while BOS’s Cam Newton scored a team-high 20 points.

With one week to go for the league points championship, three teams have a legitimate shot at the trophy. Boston leads in overall points with 993. Syracuse is 31 points back at 962 and Dallas is 39 points back with 954. Philadelphia (77 pts. back) and Happy Valley (82 pts. back) dropped further off the pace this week and would need some big surprises to finish in the money for the total points race.

Violence vs. Blizzard in Fantasy Bowl XX

It was a Monday night nail biter in Syracuse, but kicker David Akers’ 4th-quarter PAT nudged the Blizzard past the Dallas Armadillos 74-73 for a slot in Fantasy Bowl XX. Syracuse will meet the top-seeded Happy Valley Violence, who shut down the defending champion Boston Wildcats 54-46.

It’s the 5th trip to the Fantasy Bowl for the Syracuse franchise, who has a 2-2 record in the title game: wins in 2004 (59-27 over the Mud) and 2000 (62-47 over the Wildcats) and losses in 1997 (49-30 to the Wildcats) and a 47-40 loss to the Bandits in the first Fantasy Bowl in 1992.

Happy Valley makes their second trip to the title game following a 65-46 loss to the Wildcats in the 2008 championship game.

With the 1-point loss, Dallas came oh-so-close to that franchise’s first-ever appearance in the league championship game, although Dallas co-owner Sam McClain lead his previous team — the Los Angeles Riot! — to league championships in 1993 and 1996.

Happy Valley Grabs #1 Seed; Other 3 Playoff Teams All Lose

If you’re only as good as your last game, then the Engle Division winning Violence must be riding high. Happy Valley (10-4) secured the #1 playoff seed and was the only one of the 4 playoff-bound teams to win their final regular season game. The Violence notched the league’s second highest score of the week, beating Oregon 79-62. Happy Valley will face the defending champion Boston Wildcats (8-5-1), who were 86-64 losers to Frelinghuysen. The Froglickers’ 86 points were the week’s highest score. Happy Valley beat Boston 38-35 in Week 12.

The other Fantasy Bowl semifinal will feature the Paterno Division winning Syracuse Blizzard (9-5) vs. the Cappelletti Division winning Dallas Armadillos (9-4-1). Syracuse was a 75-63 loser to the Philadelphia Griffins, while the Armadillos lost to Mercer 63-47. Dallas and Syracuse did not play each other during the regular season.

Playoff teams set: DAL HVV SYR and BOS; Griffins will finish with their first losing season EVER

There will be no drama in the final week of the regular season — the 4 playoff teams are set. The Dallas Armadillos, who wrapped up their division 2 weeks ago, will be joined by the Happy Valley Violence, who ironically beat Dallas this week 76-71. Dallas at 9-3-1 has the league’s best record. Happy Valley stands at 9-4 heading into the final week.

The two highest-scoring teams of Week 13 are also the final two playoff participants. Syracuse posted a huge 105-37 win over the Froglickers, and in the process notched the league’s highest score in nearly 3 years. Boston knocked MassIll out of playoff contention with a 90-31 win over the Mud. A Blizzard win in Week 14 would clinch the division. A Blizzard loss coupled with a Wildcats win would give the division title to Boston. Since both teams are already in the playoffs, the division loser will get the Wild Card slot.

In the overall points race with 4 weeks remaining, Boston has increased it’s lead slightly, but Syracuse has taken 2nd place in points at 44 behind Boston. Dallas is 3rd and Happy Valley in 5th — all within 86 points of the leader. The 4th-place points team at 60 behind the leader is the 5-8 Philadelphia Griffins who, with a 61-33 loss to Oregon this weekend, will finish with the franchise’s first losing season ever. Prior to this season, the Griffins were the last remaining team in the 20-year history of our league to never suffer a losing season.

Dallas wins division, Violence increases lead, Wildcats lead wild Paterno division by half game over MIM and SYR

We haven’t seen too many divisions clinched in Week 11, but Dallas has captured the Cappelletti Division crown. The 8-2-1 Armadillos lead 5-6 Miami by 3.5 games with only 3 games remaining. Dallas captures the division despite a 39-20 loss to the Muffdivers this week. New Chester’s 47-28 loss to FFL knocks them back to 4-6-1 and eliminated from playoff contention. Mercer and Keystone, both with only 3 wins, have been eliminated for a couple of weeks.

Happy Valley’s resurgence continues. The Violence are now on a 3-game winning streak and have jumped 1.5 games ahead of 5-5-1 Orange County in the Engle Division standings. The Beach Dudes have lost 4 of their last 5 games. Oregon (4-6-1) and Richburgh (4-7) are technically still in the race — at least for one more week.

The Paterno Division remains a tightly contested slugfest, featuring 4 of the top 6 scoring teams through the first 11 weeks. Boston sits atop the division at 7-3-1, but they are just a half game ahead of both MassIll and Syracuse, both with 7-4 records. Philadelphia — second overall in points — is not technically out of it at 5-6. But the Griffins and the Froglickers (also at 5-6) would need some miraculous circumstances to make the playoffs at this point.

Brady now a Froglicker; Rice heads to Wildcats; Reggie Bush to Blizzard

The first trade at the 2011 trading deadline is a blockbuster: the Boston Wildcats have shipped QB Tom Brady to the Frelinghuysen Froglickers for RB Ray Rice. The teams also announced an additional player and a draft pick will be named later as part of the deal. “Tom Brady helped the Wildcats to two Fantasy Bowl Champsionships,” Wildcats owner Ron Yeany said, “but we felt we couldn’t keep Tom after this season and so we’ll move forward with Cam Newton as our franchise quarterback.” Boston is in a tight race in the Paterno Division as the season hits the home stretch. The Froglickers appear to be building for 2012, and have acquired the franchise’s highest-profile signal caller since the Steve Young glory days.

Syracuse — a half game ahead of Boston in the Paterno Division — also made a move at the trading deadline, acquiring RB Reggie Bush from Keystone for a 2012 1st-round draft pick. Blizzard owner told Fantasy Flyer that he felt the team had a hole to fill at running back for the playoff run. Syracuse has been beset by injuries at the position, with Darren McFadden on the bench for several weeks and Knowshon Moreno now on IR.

The Wildcats and the Blizzard play one another in a pivotal week 11 game that will give one team a big advantage in the division race. The Paterno Division — with 4 of the 7 top-scoring teams at the trade deadline — is one of the most competitive races we’ve seen in recent league history.

Paterno Division tightens up as Dallas and The Dudes increase their division leads

BOB Big Bang 80
MIA Muffdivers 48
BANG: RB Steven Jackson had his best effort in a very, very long time, leading Oregon with 26 points. Ben Roethlisberger added 18 and Billy Cundiff added 13. Oregon improves to 4-4 on the season. DIVERS: Miami drops to 4-4 with the loss, despite strong efforts from Frank Gore (17) and Nate Washington (12).
PHI Griffins 64
BOS Wildcats 29
GRIFFINS: Philadelphia wins their 4th straight game and pulls into second place in overall points, just 8 behind the leader. LeSean McCoy had a monster game, with 29 points. Philadelphia is only one game behind Syracuse and Boston in the tightly-packed Paterno Division.WILDCATS: After a 4-0 start, Boston has lost 3 of their last 4 games. Opponents are averaging 69 points per week against the Wildcats over the last 5 weeks. The 29-point effort this week is the season low for Boston.
OCD Beach Dudes 63
HVV Violence 39
DUDES: The Dudes improve to 5-2-1 and hold a 1.5 game lead in the Engle Division. Four Dudes starters scored in double digits, with Adrian Peterson leading the way with 19. VIOLENCE: Happy Valley drops back to even at 4-4, despite strong efforts from Matthew Stafford (17) and Arian Foster (14). But the other 6 starters managed only a collective 8 points.
MIM Mud 49
SYR Blizzard 29
MUD: A good solid effort for all but 2 Mud starters put MassIll back in the win column, as they improve to 4-4. Anquan Boldin and Steve Smith lead the scoring with 11 points each.  BLIZZARD: Without Aaron Rodgers, Darren McFadden and Roddy White, the bright spots were few and far between for Syracuse, who drops to 5-3 but remains tied atop the Paterno Division. Beanie Wells lead the scoring with 11 points.
FFL Froglickers 39
RIB Raptors 28
LICKERS: All but 2 Froglicker starters scored, but the bulk of the points came from Ray Rice, who scored 20. Frelinghuysen improves to 3-5 on the season. RAPTORS: Richmond drops it’s 6th game of the season. DeMarco Murray came back to earth and managed only 2 points. Matt Schaub lead the scoring with 11 points.
DAL Armadillos 38
KEY Longfellows 8
ARMADILLOS: Dallas improves to a league-best 6-1-1 on the season, as all but 2 starters scored, lead by Calvin Johnson’s 14 points. Dallas now holds a 2.5 game lead in the Cappelletti Division. LONGFELLOWS: It can’t get much worse for Keystone. A week after managing only 5 points, our freak October snowstorm knocked Keystone headquarters off the grid and they couldn’t make lineup changes. The Longfellows are tied for the league-worst record at 2-6.
NCT Thorobreds
MER Mustangs 19
THOROBREDS: It wasn’t exactly a barnburner game, but New Chester wins a low-scoring affair and improves to 3-4-1. Eli Manning had the bulk of the scoring with 16 points. MUSTANGS: A lackluster effort by Mercer drops them to 3-4-1 on the season. Drew Brees (7) had his worst effort of the year but still lead the Mustangs in scoring. Two touchdowns sat on the bench in what could have made a difference.
