NFL Schedule Changes Due to Hurricane Ike

The NFL has made some schedule changes to accommodate the cancellation of the Ravens-Texans game in Houston due to the hurricane.

  • Both Baltimore and Houston are off this week – so this is now essentially their bye week
  • Ravens-Texans game is rescheduled for Week 10
  • Cincinnati will now play Baltimore Week 8, instead of Week 10 as originally scheduled
  • Cincinnati’s bye week has been moved to Week 10

These bye week changes are now updated in the Web League Manager.

Off and Running

We’re off and running on the 2008 season, and big running games powered the two top-scoring teams on the weekend. Last year’s Fantasy Bowl participants — Philadelphia and Miami — have notched the high scores for week 1, primarily on the legs of Willie Parker, Michael Turner, and Brian Westbook.

PHI Griffins 73, MIM Mud 27 — Michael Turner’s coming out party in Atlanta was big bonus time for the defending Fantasy Bowl champs. Turner has the week’s high score at 32 points. Terrell Owens contributed 11 points for the Griffins.

MIA Muffdivers 71, KEY Longfellows 39 — Steelers RB Willie Parker contributed 29 points while cross-state Eagles star Brian Westbrook racked up 17 points for Miami. All but one of Keystone’s starters scored, but none of them could get to double digits.

HVV Violence 63, DAL Armadillos 29 — Happy Valley will comes away with the easy win, despite QB Carson Palmer’s -1 point. Newly-acquired RB Marion Barber led the Violence with 17 points, while Steelers WR Hines Ward added 14. RB Frank Gore’s 13 points was one of the few highlights for Dallas.

FFL Froglickers 51, NCT Thorobreds 33 — QB Donovan McNabb (23) and RB Reggie Bush (16) provided all but 12 of the Froglickers points. All but one of the Thorobred starters scored, but none managed to break into double-digit points.

RIB Raptors 48, SYR Blizzard 26 — RB Thomas Jones (14) and WR Jerricho Cotchery (11) led the scoring for the Raptors. The Blizzard debut for No. 1 pick RB Darren McFadden fell far short of fan expectations, as McFadden failed to score with 46 rushing yards and no TDs.

BOB Big Bang 41, OCD Beach Dudes 34 — The big news here is bad news for the defending point champions: Tom Brady is done for the year. That will hit the Dudes hard, as the Brady-Moss magic in 2007 was the key to their points win. Marshawn Lynch led the Big Bang with 11 points, while the Beach Dudes saw few points from anyone not named Peterson (14) or Moss (13).

BOS Wildcats 41, MER Mustangs 26 — Rookie RB Matt Forte’s debut for the Wildcats lead the team with 14 points, and WR Reggie Wayne chipped in 11. The Mustangs got 19 points from QB Drew Brees, 7 points from K Adam Vinatieri, and zero points from the rest of their starters.

Rule change voting results

Rule change voting was conducted in the day leading up to the draft, and the results announced before the draft. The results:

It will be interesting to see if Griffins owner Nick Fisher proposes his “cannot propose the same rule change in consecutive years” proposal again next year 🙂

Protected rosters; draft call info

The editors here at Fantasy Football Flyer thought it would be obvious to post the protected rosters on the Rosters page without sending an email or writing a news post here. We were mistaken. Our apologies. The protected rosters were posted around 1am Monday.

Remember: the draft is this Sunday at 11am Eastern. Conference call info below:

Deadline trade flurry; McClain back in the league

As the midnight deadline for protected rosters approaches, there’s been a flurry of trade activity and big news — the surprise re-emergence of Sam McClain as a new co-owner with Paul Gilgallon of the Dallas (???) Armadillos franchise. And as Frog Licker’s owner Dave Zilberfarb pointed out via email, it’s about time they move this “Dallas” franchise to Florida already. (Of course, let’s not forget that in McClain’s previous stint in the league his team eschewed the traditional regional team name and sold out to the corporate big wigs and became the NIKEtown Knights, so who knows what is up the collective sleeves of the newly expanded ownership group in Dallas, er … Florida.)

But we digress … here are the trades:

  • Marvin Harrison goes from DAL to FFL for a 2008 (2) draft pick
  • Tory Holt goes from MIA to DAL for a 2008 (4) draft pick
  • T.J. Houshmandzadeh goes from OCD to DAL, for a draft pick swap (DAL’s 2nd for OCD’s 4th)
  • Ricky Williams goes from BOS to DAL for the 2009 conditional draft pick
  • Dwayne Bowe and a 3rd-round pick goes from KEY to BOB for a 2 picks (2nd and 4th)

And word has it phones are still ringing…

Marion Barber shipped to Happy Valley

Cowboys running back Marion Barber is headed to Happy Valley, as the Violence swap first-round draft picks with the Orange County Beach Dudes to land the stud running back. Happy Valley is trying to bounce back from a mediocre year, while the Beach Dudes find themselves loaded with talent and they can’t keep it all. It’s the first trade of the 2008 preseason, as the protection deadline (Sun. Aug 24 midnight EST) approaches.

Protection Deadline Set

Mark your calendars: the deadline for protected players is midnight, Sunday August 24. Please email your list of protected players to Ying.

Teams that were in the draft lottery can protected 5 regular players + 1 prospect. This applies to SYR, DAL, MER, RIB, FFL, BOS, and HVV.

All other teams can protect 4 regular players + 1 prospect. Prospect-eligible players are highlighted in blue on the final spreadsheet from 2007 season. Download link below – PDF file.

Rule change proposal 1: Revise league awards/payouts

I propose revisions to the league awards and payouts. Let’s face it, there is little interest for teams after week 14 who do not make the top-tier playoffs. The consolation bracket doesn’t generate much interest, and no one wants to win the award for “most points of non-playff, non-money-winning teams” — an award that barely covers half the league entry fee and knocks teams out of the lottery system (including, potentially, teams with losing records). We’ve also had a lot of interest in increasing league fees, but not so dramatic as doubling them.

THIS PROPOSAL BY YING AND TRZ: Eliminates three awards (consolation bracket winner, consolation runner-up, and the consolation points award), and in their place, give awards to the top two non-playoff teams based on total points. This proposal would not change anything in the top-tier playoffs, but it would eliminate the “consolation bracket playoffs” while potentially keeping several teams more interested through the end of the season. This proposal would also increase league fees by $20 per team annually, but the new awards structure means that if you win money, it’s a large enough prize to at least cover your league fee.

Additionally, the overall #1 and #2 points teams would also be eligible for the new awards if they do not make the playoffs. In my opinion, if a team finishes #1 or #2 in overall points and didn’t make the playoffs, they SHOULD be eligible for the combined awards, especially in regards to their draft position (they would be drafting lower, as they should be).

See the Rules page for current structure for comparison. This is the proposed new award/payout structure:

FFL Playoff Champion 400
FFL Playoff Runner-Up 275
FFL Playoff Third Place 250
FFL Playoff Fourth Place 225
Overall Points Champion 230
Overall Points Runner-Up 200
** First place points, non-playoff teams 175
** Second place points, non-playoff teams 160
Draft phone call (est) 225
Expenses (est) 100
$160 x 14 teams = $2,240 2240

** = new award category, replacing consolation bracket/point awards

Rule change proposal 2: Reduce player protections

Reduce player protections to 1 quarterback, 1 running back, and 1 receiver (WR/TE). Teams that don’t win money can keep a prospect at any position. That lowers protection slots to 3 or 4, down from the current rules of 5 or 6. It also levels the playing field big time because playoff and money-winning teams would only be able to protect 1 player per position. And it would only extend the draft by 2 rounds. (This is likely a rule significant enough that it would have to be put into effect AFTER the next draft, so it wouldn’t be instituted until 2009 season.) Proposed by the Froglickers with input from the Wildcats.
