Dudes, Griffins finish 1-2 in points; Thorobreds' late surge grabs consolation points award

As expected, the Orange County Beach Dudes won the 2007 points title, breaking the previous record by 89 points. The Dudes finish the year at 1,298 points. They averaged 76+ points per week. The Philadelphia Griffins finished second in points. Their 1,118 points this year would have won the points title in any other previous year but two (2004, 1998 – both of which were Griffins’ wins). And let’s ponder one final time on what these numbers would have looked like had the Griffins NOT traded Randy Moss (and his 216 points) to the Beach Dudes before this season. 😉

The New Chester Thorobreds posted this week’s high score — 69 points. And this late surge propelled the Thorobreds to 810 points on the season, passing Boston (794) and Happy Valley (787) to grab the consolation points award.

PLEASE REMEMBER to check the web site periodically for the next few weeks as we propose and vote on rule changes — see the sidebar to the right for proposals, and send yours in ASAP.

Week 17 scores/stats, year-end stats, top players, etc., and other updates to 2007 items will be posted over the next few days. Happy New Year!

Rule change proposal 2: Reduce player protections

Reduce player protections to 1 quarterback, 1 running back, and 1 receiver (WR/TE). Teams that don’t win money can keep a prospect at any position. That lowers protection slots to 3 or 4, down from the current rules of 5 or 6. It also levels the playing field big time because playoff and money-winning teams would only be able to protect 1 player per position. And it would only extend the draft by 2 rounds. (This is likely a rule significant enough that it would have to be put into effect AFTER the next draft, so it wouldn’t be instituted until 2009 season.) Proposed by the Froglickers with input from the Wildcats.

Rule change proposal 1: Revise league awards/payouts

I propose revisions to the league awards and payouts. Let’s face it, there is little interest for teams after week 14 who do not make the top-tier playoffs. The consolation bracket doesn’t generate much interest, and no one wants to win the award for “most points of non-playff, non-money-winning teams” — an award that barely covers half the league entry fee and knocks teams out of the lottery system (including, potentially, teams with losing records). We’ve also had a lot of interest in increasing league fees, but not so dramatic as doubling them.

THIS PROPOSAL BY YING: Eliminate three awards (consolation bracket winner, consolation runner-up, and the consolation points award), and in their place, give awards to the top two non-playoff teams based on total points. This proposal would not change anything in the top-tier playoffs, but it would eliminate the “consolation bracket playoffs” while potentially keeping several teams more interested through the end of the season. This proposal would also increase league fees by $20 per team annually. The new awards structure would payout increased awards across the board.

Additionally, the overall #1 and #2 points teams would also be eligible for the new awards if they do not make the playoffs. In my opinion, if a team finishes #1 or #2 in overall points and didn’t make the playoffs, they SHOULD be eligible for the combined awards, especially in regards to their draft position (they would be drafting lower, as they should be).

See the Rules page for current structure for comparison. This is my proposed new award/payout structure:

FFL Playoff Champion 450
FFL Playoff Runner-Up 340
FFL Playoff Third Place 275
FFL Playoff Fourth Place 225
Overall Points Champion 200
Overall Points Runner-Up 150
** First place points, non-playoff teams 150
** Second place points, non-playoff teams 125
Draft phone call (est) 225
Expenses (est) 100
$160 x 14 teams = $2,240 2240

** = new award category, replacing consolation bracket/point awards

Griffins repeat, submerge Muffdivers 78-37; Beach Dudes break all-time points record in loss to Mud

The Philadelphia Griffins became only the second team in league history to win back-to-back Fantasy Bowl championships this weekend, with a convincing 78-37 win over the Miami Muffdivers in Fantasy Bowl XVI. Only the Wisconsin Cheeseheads (now Frelinghuysen Froglickers) previously won Fantasy Bowls back-to-back: in 1994 over the Wildcats and in 1995 over the Griffins. The win marks the Griffins’ fourth Fantasy Bowl championship — also a new league record: the Griffins’ were previously tied with MassIll (formerly Graynbald Mud and LA Riot!) with three franchise titles, although the Mud/Riot franchise titles were under different owners.

The undercard game in the Fantasy Bowl playoffs goes to the MassIll Mud, who upset the Orange County Beach Dudes 78-65. But while the Dude’s 65 points was not enough to win this game, it did break a league record that has stood since 1998: OCD now has 1,237 points on the year, breaking the record league high previously held by the Griffins. And while the Dudes’ first trip to the playoffs ended in disappointment, they are also a virtual lock to win the league’s points championship, holding a 172-point lead over Philadelphia going into the final week of the season.

In the consolation bracket final, the Big Oregon Bang squeezed by the Keystone Longfellows 63-59. The Big Bang has clawed their way into third place overall in points, but at 180 points behind 2nd-place Philadelphia, it appears the top two teams in points is decided at this point.

The only drama going into the final week appears to be for the “coveted” award for “high points of teams that don’t give a shit at this point” award. Currently, the standings are Happy Valley at 765, Boston at 761, and New Chester at 741. Since the Violence and Wildcats pretty much benched their starters last week, it might indicate this “award” isn’t valued as highly as being in the draft lottery and getting the extra protection slot. Perhaps it’s time we eliminate this so-called award. Boston will surely nominate it as a rule change.

And last but not least, the Cellar Dweller final game found the Syracuse Blizzard buried by Mercer 62-24. Unfortunately, it’s the franchise’s third Cellar Dweller “title” — which surely means owner Doug Weaver ought to be showing up with a few kegs the next time we get a big group of owners together 😉 It seems to be feast or famine for the Blizzard owner — Doug is one of only three active owners to have multiple Fantasy Bowl titles, but the down years seem to hit rock bottom. Perhaps it signifies a 2008 resurgence for the Blizzard.

Muffdivers to face Griffins in Fantasy Bowl XVI

The Miami Muffdivers, making the franchise’s first-ever trip to the big show, has advanced to Fantasy Bowl XVI with a 39-36 win over Orange County. The juggernaut that had been the Beach Dudes was whacked with bad weather in couple key games and posted their lowest score of the year. Miami will face the Philadelphia Griffins, who cruised to an easy 57-23 win over the MassIll Mud.

Miami played Philadelphia in Week 9 of this season, and the Muffdivers came away with a 62-52 victory. The Griffins are defending Fantasy Bowl champions and the franchise is making it’s record 9th appearance in the Fantasy Bowl.

With two weeks left in the regular season, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where OCD and PHI do not finish 1-2 in points. The Dudes, at 1172, are only 37 points shy of the all-time points record. The Griffins are 185 points back, while the next closest team (MIA) is 160 points behind Philadelphia.

In the consolation bracket, Oregon will move on to play Keystone in the consolation final. The Big Bang beat the Thorobreds 66-45, while Keystone knocked off Happy Valley 64-39.

And in the Cellar Dweller Toilet Bowl, the Mercer Mustangs will play the Syracuse Blizzard. The loser of that game becomes the Cellar Dweller.

    • (#2, 12-3) PHI Griffins vs. (#4, 9-4-2) MIA Muffdivers
  • Third-Place Game

    • (#5, 10-5) KEY Longfellows vs. (#6, 9-6) BOB Big Oregon Bang

    • LOSING TEAM is Ultimate Cellar Dweller

Mud clinches division; Miami grabs the Wild Card

MassIll is into the playoffs as the Engle Division champions with a 47-30 win over the Froglickers. On the final weekend of the season, the Mud found themselves in a “win-and-you’re-in” scenario, and they did just that.

The Wild Card slot goes to the Miami Muffdivers, who beat Oregon 70-53 and finishes with an 8-4-2 record. Miami grabs the Wild Card despite the fact that Keystone finishes with 9 wins. The Longfellows hung on for a 54-52 win over Mercer. Miami’s 8-4-2 record is statistically tied with Keystone’s 9-5 record, and Miami holds the head-to-head tiebreaker via their 52-49 win over the Longfellows in week 13.

By winning the Wild Card, Miami finally clears the hurdle and makes the franchise’s first-ever appearance in the Fantasy Bowl playoffs.

Orange County and Philadelphia continued to roll along, both scoring 80 points in easy wins. Both finish the regular season 11-3. Since the two teams did not play during the regular season, the Beach Dudes will take the top seed based on their lead in overall points.

In the first round of the Fantasy Bowl playoffs, the matchups will be OCD vs. MIA in #1-#4 game, while PHI vs. MIM is the #2-#3 game.

Keystone, Oregon, Happy Valley and New Chester will all make the consolation playoffs. Keystone finishes 9-5 and gets the #1 seed. The other three teams all finished with identical 8-6 records. Head-to-head matchups with the teams involved are listed below with consolation bracket seeding:

  • KEY (9-5): is #1 seed
  • BOB (8-6): lost to HVV, beat KEY and NCT
    — BOB is #2 seed
  • NCT (8-6): split with HVV but has better division record (6-2); lost to BOB, no game vs. KEY
    — NCT is #3 seed
  • HVV (8-6): split with NCT, but has worse division record (4-4); beat KEY and BOB
    — HVV is #4 seed

The consolation bracket matchups for week 15 will be KEY vs. HVV, and BOB vs. NCT. The Wildcats (6-8) and the Froglickers (5-9) are finished for the year, while the bottom 4 teams will move onto the Cellar Dweller bracket where the only way out is to win. The first round in the cellar will see Richburgh (4-8-2) vs. Syracuse (2-12), while the other game pairs Mercer (4-10) vs. Dallas (3-11).

Slugfest! Griffins win division with 98-82 mauling of Wildcats

The two hottest teams in the league squared off this weekend, producing a high-octane shootout. The Philadelphia Griffins clinched the Paterno Division and a playoff berth with a 98-82 win over the Boston Wildcats. LaDainian Tomlinson has found his groove, and his 29 points was high for the week and paced the Griffins’ scoring machine. For Boston, it’s a case of too little too late. The Wildcats have scored 176 points over the past two weeks, but with 7 losses the Cats are out of the top-tier playoffs and could miss the consolation playoffs as well.

Orange County clinched the Cappelletti Division title and a playoff berth, as they rolled easily over the Raptors 75-38. The Dudes also broke the thousand-point threshold for the season (1,056 so far) and need only 153 points through the last 4 weeks to break the Griffin’s league-record 1,209 points in 1998.

Over in the Engle Division, we’ve got a big log jam — a 3-way tie for first place going into the final week. Miami, MassIll (both 7-4-2 overall, 3-1-1 in division) and Oregon (8-5 overall, 2-3 in division) are all statistically tied in winning percentage. There may be a lot of tiebreaker scenarios going on to sort out this division race. The Muffdivers battle the Big Bang in week 14; the Mud will wrestle the Froglickers in the final week of the regular season.

Happy Valley and Keystone remain atop the wild card race, and HVV holds the tiebreaker over KEY via their week 9 win over KEY. The Violence upped it’s record to 8-5, beating the Big Bang 64-52, while the Longfellows came up short against Miami, 52-49. Their record falls to 8-5. Happy Valley plays New Chester in week 14, and Keystone faces Mercer.

REMINDER: Kickoff Thursday night is your last chance to add running backs or receivers. Only QBs and Ks can be added thereafter.

Dudes stumble again; Longfellows continue to surge

The Philadelphia Eagles’ unexpectedly tight game vs. the New England Patriots Sunday night saw a rare occurence for the 2007 season — Tom Brady and Randy Moss held in check. The dynamic duo’s well-below-average production spelled doom for the Orange County Beach Dudes, who lost for their second time in the past three weeks, 57-53 to the New Chester Thorobreds. A win for the Dudes, who left 45 points on the bench, would have clinched the division title outright. OCD has likely already clinched the Cappelletti Division, short of some sustained record-smashing performances through the last two weeks.

Keystone won their third game in a row, and 6th of their last 7, with a 64-56 victory over MassIll. The Longfellows lead the wild card chase at this point but are still within striking distance of the Paterno Division title. Philadelphia maintains a 1-game lead in the division, as the Griffins beat the Big Bang 83-62.

Even with the loss, Oregon maintains a 1-game lead in the Engle Division over both MassIll and Miami, now both with 6-4-2 records following the Muffdivers’ 23-23 tie with Richburgh.
