Clean Sweep: Thorobreds Rally For Points Win
The New Chester Thorobreds posted a league-high 80 points in Week 17, easily overtaking the Big Oregon Bang and capturing the league’s points championship to go alongside the trophy for Fantasy Bowl XIV. The Thorobreds become the third team in league history to capture both the Fantasy Bowl and the points championship in the same year — a feat previous done by the 1994 Wisconsin Cheeseheads (now FFL Froglickers) and 1997 Pennsylvania (now Boston) Wildcats.

Thorobreds Win Fantasy Bowl XIV
The Cinderella Season is complete for the New Chester Thorobreds, and their glass slipper is the trophy for Fantasy Bowl XIV, winning the league’s championship game with a decisive 93-73 win over the Big Oregon Bang.
The Thorobreds (then the New Denver 2x4s) finished the 2004 regular season with an 0-14 record, and lost two more games on the way to an 0-16 overall record, and were the Ultimate Cellar Dwellars of 2004. But just a year later, the newly-renamed Thorobreds are champs.
And the 20-point win over the Big Bang has nearly deadlocked the league’s points race. Going into the final week, the BOB Big Bang’s lead in the overall point race has slipped to a mere 7 points. BOB will enter week 17 with 990 points. NCT will enter week 17 with 983 points.
The Boston Wildcats are a distant 3rd place in overall points with 852. BOS also grabbed 3rd place overall in the playoffs, with a 59-21 win over the Philadelphia Griffins.
In the consolation bracket, Happy Valley rallied with 24 points Monday night from Corey Dillon and Adam Vinatieri to edge the Keystone Longfellows 51-46 in the consolation bracket finals.
And in the year that saw least year’s Cellar Dwellar bounce back to win the championship, last year’s champs were tossed to the bottom of the heap. The Syracuse Blizzard fell 72-59 to Miami, and SYR reigns as 2005’s Ultimate Cellar Dwellar.

Worst To First???
WORST TO FIRST?: The Cinderella season for New Chester is almost complete, as the Thorobreds advance to Fantasy Bowl XIV. The franchise finished last season a record 0-14, and went on to sink to the Cellar Dwellar with a final record of 0-16. It’s hard to imagine a more dramatic turnaround in one year.
BIG BANG ADVANCES: The Big Oregon Bang advances to Fantasy Bowl XIV with a thrilling 63-60 win over the Boston Wildcats. Wildcats owner Ron Yeany followed the action through the late afternoon games, watched several lead changes as the teams were neck-and-neck, and saw the Wildcats lose when Raiders RB LaMont Jordan broke a 27-yard run late in the 4th quarter. Oregon won Fantasy Bowl XII in 2003.
CONSOLATION (NO-LONGER) DEADLOCKED: So we don’t have a tie in the KEY-MIM consolation game … KEY wins outright, 42-41. I’m not sure what the stat change was from those posted Sunday night to the official ones posted Tuesday, but it made a one point difference. KEY faces HVV for the consolation bracket title.
DIVERS DOWN: Miami has moved into the Cellar Dwellar finals by virtue of an 86-31 loss to Orange County. MIA plays Syracuse, and the loser of that game is the official Cellar Dwellar.

Week 14 Headlines
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, NO REPEATERS — None of this year’s Fantasy Bowl playoffs teams (BOB, PHI, NCT, and BOS) were in the top-tier playoffs last year, and this is the FIRST time in league history that all four teams from the previous year failed to make the Fantasy Bowl playoffs. Last year’s playoff teams were Syracuse, Graynbald (now MIM), Richmond (now RIB), and Dallas.
AND A 1, AND A 2, AND 3 AND 4 AND — Remember last year when the top 4 highest scoring teams of the year failed to make the Fantasy Bowl playoffs? Perhaps it’s further evidence of how odd 2004 really was. This year it’s the exact opposite: the top 4 highest scoring teams in the regular season are the four teams in the hunt for the league champsionship.
WILDCATS ARE THE WILD CARD — The Boston Wildcats will return to the Fantasy Bowl playoff bracket for the first time since 2001, holding on for a 58-50 Week 14 win over the MassILL Mud to clinch the final playoff spot as the wild card team. Boston (9-5) will face the #1 seed, Big Oregon Bang (11-3). In the other Fantasy Bowl semifinal, the #2 seed Philadelphia Griffins (10-3-1) will face #3 New Chester Thorobreds (10-4).
CONSOLATION BRACKET:
#1 seed Keystone Longfellows (8-6) vs. #4 seed MassILL Mud (7-7)
#2 seed Happy Valley Violence (8-6) vs. #3 seed Mercer Mustangs (7-6-1).
CELLAR DWELLARS:
OCD Beach Dudes (5-9) vs. MIA Muffdivers (3-11)
SYR Blizzard (4-10) vs. DAL Armadillos (3-11)
Week 13 Headlines
WILD WILD CARD: Going into the final week of the regular season, the race for the final playoff spot is still up in the air. The Boston Wildcats are the only team that holds their own destiny — a win over MassILL Mud this week would clinch the wild card berth with a 9-5 record. The Happy Valley Violence can also finish at 9-5, but HVV lost their Week 10 matchup against BOS and would thus lose the tiebreaker. BUT WAIT … it gets better. Keystone, Mercer, and MassILL are all sitting there with 7-6 records. It is possible to have a 5-team tie, because BOS, HVV, KEY, MIM and MER could all finish with 8-6 records.
POINT RACE TIGHTENS: With upset losses by Philadelphia and Oregon, New Chester now shares the league’s best record at 10-3 with the Griffins and Big Bang. The Thorobreds have now won 5 in a row and have closed to within 23 points of the Big Bang for the overall points lead. Last year’s point champs, the Griffins, are 80 points back and last year’s points runnerup, the Wildcats, are 121 back. It could get interesting … some of the top-scoring players might find themselves on teams with home field advantage clinched in a week or two.
THE NEXT-TO-LAST GOOSE EGG FALLS: The next-to-last zero has fallen off the standings page — Syracuse’s 40-35 win over Oregon was the Blizzard’s first division win of the year. The only remaining zero on the standings (other than ties) is the Thorobred’s undefeated division record of 5-0.
Week 12 Headlines
WORST TO FIRST: Hey, remember those 2004 New Denver 2x4s? The Studs staggered through an 0-14 season and sunk to the bottom of the cellar dwellar playoffs to finish at 0-16? This week, the New Chester Thorobreds are 9-3 and clinched the Engle Division title. Maybe it was all in the name change. Are you reading this, Paul? 🙂
A BIGGER BANG: The team with the 4th worst record in 2004 also clinched a division title this week: The Big Oregon Bang. Riding a now 7-game winning streak, the Big Bang are tied with the Griffins at 10-2 for the best record in the league. BOB is also on pace to challenge the record 647 total points at running back, a record held by the 1998 Griffins in the year Terrell Davis, Marshall Faulk, and Fred Taylor were all at their peak. The 1998 Griffins averaged just over 38 points each week at the RB position. The 2005 Big Bang are averaging about 37.5 points each week at the RB position with Shaun Alexander, Steven Jackson and Lamont Jordan.
WILD CARD FIGHT: With two weeks left in the regular season, the only missing piece for the Fantasy Bowl XIV playoffs is the wild card team. There are 7 teams still technically in the hunt: Boston, Happy Valley, and Keystone are all tied with 7-5 records. Mercer and MassILL are still in it at 6-6. Richburgh and the Froglickers, both 5-7 are not officially eliminated at this point, but their hopes are slimmer than Vince’s seat cushion.
Week 6 Headlines
STREAKS SNAPPED: The Griffins, who started the season 5-0, suffered their first loss. The Beach Dudes and the Blizzard, who started the season 0-5, picked up their first wins. No teams are undefeated, and no teams are winless.
POINTS RACE TIGHT: The top 5 teams in points (Wildcats, Big Bang, Violence, Raptors, and Mud) are separated by only 20 points.
SHARING THE SPOTLIGHT: Through 6 weeks, there have been 6 different teams with the highest score of the week (in order: PHI, BOS, FFL, RIB, HVV, and BOB). Also, there have been 6 different players with the individual high score of the week (in order: Willie Parker, Donovan McNabb, LaDainian Tomlinson, Plaxico Burress, Tom Brady, and Shaun Alexander). Also note those 6 players are on 6 different FFL teams.
