Graynbald Mud are Fantasy Bowl VII Champs
The Graynbald Mud, with rookie owners Ronnie Feldman and Greg MacInnis, pulled off a huge upset and defeated the New York Griffons to capture the 1998 championship in Fantasy Bowl VII.
The Griffons, the runaway point champions, were left high and dry by their running backs. Both Terrell Davis and Marshall Faulk were shut out on the weekend. The Mud enjoyed huge games from Ricky Watters (23 points) and kicker Gary Anderson, who has scored 39 points over the past two weeks.
In four Fantasy Bowl appearances, New York is now 0-4.
Last year’s champions, the Boston Wildcats, captured 3rd place with a 56-40½ win over the Wisconsin Cheeseheads.
The Newport Beach Nightmare walked away with the Consolation bracket, just barely edging the Big Carolina Bang by a score of 41-40½. It also appears the Nightmare will win 2nd-place in total points, holding an 88-point edge over Wisconsin going into the final weekend.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS everyone … the next update will be Dec. 30 or 31, when I will figure out final point standings, final winnings, draft order for 1999, and 1st round draft lottery chances.

NYG vs. GBM in Fantasy Bowl VII
The New York Griffons and Graynbald Mud will square off against each other for the 1998 championship in Fantasy Bowl VII.
The Griffons, rolling along and setting all point records along the way, easily dispatched the Wisconsin Cheeseheads 81½-45 over the weekend. New York owner Nick Fisher is still seeking his first championship after going 0-3 in three previous trips to the Fantasy Bowl.
Graynbald had no problem bumping the defending champions, beating Boston by a 57½-22 count. The Mud, with new owners Ronnie Feldman and Greg MacInnis, have picked up right where former ownership left off. The franchise is 2-0 in previous trips to the Fantasy Bowl, and had made the top-tier playoffs 4 out of 6 years under previous owner Sam McClain.
In the Consolation bracket, Carolina will meet Newport Beach for the Consolation Bowl. The Big Bang stopped New Denver 41½-32, while Newport rolled over Dallas 55-32½. The Armadillos were the only higher-seeded team to lose on the weekend.
Playoff matchups set
Four teams will vie to play for the championship in Fantasy Bowl VII. The defending champion Boston Wildcats secured the final playoff spot, gaining the wild card slot with a 65-59 win over the Big Carolina Bang. The Wildcats (10-4) will face the Graynbald Mud (10-4) in the semi-finals.
The other semi-final matchup will pit the New York Griffons (13-1) against the the Wisconsin Cheeseheads (9-5). New York, winless in 3 previous Fantasy Bowls, is also on a pace to shatter the single-season scoring mark. The Griffons this week tied the all-time single game scoring mark of 117 points (and they did this without QB Mark Brunnell, who was injured early in his game and did not score).
In the consolation bracket, the Big Carolina Bang has secured the No. 1 seed, and will play the No. 4 seed New Denver 2x4s. The other consolation game will pit No. 2 seed Dallas against the No. 3 seed Newport Beach Nightmare.
Cheeseheads clinch division; BOS v. CAR will decide wild card
The (sometime-soon-to-be-EX-) Cheeseheads clinched the Engle Division championship with a 65-16 victory over Mercer. The Cheeseheads were being pursued by the Dallas Armadillos, who were knocked out of the race by a 60-46 loss to Boston.
Boston and Carolina will go head-to-head this weekend for the wild card slot. The defending champion Wildcats are in with a win. Carolina needs a win by more than 25 points to capture the wild card slot. If Carolina wins by exactly 25 points, Boston wins on the fifth tiebreaker. The Wildcats won the earlier meeting between the two teams this year, an 18-17 struggle in Week 6.
Although there are many tiebreaker scenarios, it appears both New Denver and Dallas (regardless of a W or L this weekend) are in the consolation playoff bracket, and will be joined by the loser of the battle for the wild card slot. Syracuse and Newport Beach will battle for the remaining consolation bracket slot. Newport Beach, at 6-7, is in with a win. Syracuse, also at 6-7, is in with a win AND one of these two scenarios: 1) Newport Beach loses; or 2) NDV wins and DAL loses.
The Rattlin Raptors also reached an historic mark this weekend: Richmond is the first team EVER to have an 11-game losing streak.
Griffons, Mud clinch division titles
The New York Griffons and the Graynbald Mud have clinched division titles. Both teams are guaranteed a top-tier playoff spot. The crack staff here at the Fantasy Flyer is a little understaffed this year, so this is old news if you hadn’t already figured it out for yourself. The Griffons actually clinched the division title last week while the Mud clinched their division title 2 weeks ago.
The final two playoff spots are very much up for grabs. The Cheeseheads control their own fate for the Engle Division title. They are one game ahead of Dallas, with games left against Mercer and Dallas. The Armadillos are holding tough, however, and could win the division outright if they win their final 2 games against Boston and Wisconsin. Dallas beat the Cheeseheads in their earlier matchup this year.
The wild card slot appears to be a race between the second-place team in the Engle Division (either Dallas or Wisconsin) and the current 2nd and 3rd place teams in the Paterno Division: Boston and Carolina. The Wildcats, with games remaining against both Dallas and Carolina, will clinch the wild card if they win both those contests. The Big Bang holds the tiebreaker over Wisconsin (a CAR win in week 8). Carolina doesn’t play Dallas this year, so a head-to-head tiebreaker wouldn’t come into play in that scenario. The Big Bang lost their earlier meeting this year to Boston, and they currently trail the Wildcats by one game in both overall record and division record.
New Denver, at 6-6, is technically not eliminated from wild card contention, but that scenario is about as likely as Nibs sending out an e-mail message that makes perfect sense.
And speaking of the Rattlin’ Raptors, they go for a piece of FFL history next week when they meet Newport Beach: a loss by Richmond would set the all-time record for the longest losing streak in league history. Richmond is currently tied with the 1992 Dallas Armadillos and the 1996 State College Bandits for the longest losing streak in FFL history — 10 games.

Nibs-isms Week 1:
The following e-mail was received by Fantasy Football Flyer. We’ll reproduce it here without further editing, since editing it would certainly detract from the flavor that isNIBS.

Draft day surprises
Wisconsin’s blockbuster trade of WR Antonio Freeman to Richmond for two first-round draft picks opened the 1998 FFL draft. The New York Griffons also got into the act, trading one of their numerous high draft picks for future picks.
New York’s attempt at getting roster protections reduced from 6 players down to 5 for the 1999 season was tabled by an 8-6 vote. While there appears to be a majority of owners favoring the reduced rosters, many owners expressed reticence in instituting a policy for 1999. Several owners, speaking only on condition of anonymity, said the Griffon’s draft position would be far stronger in 1999 with the new rule. This influenced several team owners, who expressed an interest to wait until year 2000 to institute any roster reduction. New York is the only team that has acquired additional 1999 draft picks (3 of them: 1st, 2nd and 5th rounds).
The “Mud” arrives
An official welcome to the Graynbald Mud. Co-owners Ronnie Feldman and Greg MacInnis bought Sam McClain’s NIKEtown Knights franchise. Sam won Fantasy Bowls in 1993 and 1996. We’re sorry to see Sam exit, but we’re looking forward to the fun that we know the Graynbald will bring to the league.
1998 Draft Order and Division lineups set
The 1998 regular draft order and division lineups are now set. These are all preliminary, and require review from the commissioner’s office. A final *official* list will be posted in the season wrap-up edition of FFFlyer (after the holidays).
Remember that the first six picks of the first round will be determined by lottery. Lottery chances are listed in the sidebar column to the right. Other than the first six picks, the draft order will be:
1. Newport Beach
2. New Denver
3. Mission Viejo
4. Richmond
5. Keystone
6. Dallas
7. Mercer
8. Carolina
9. Miami
10. NIKEtown
11. New York
12. Wisconsin
13. Syracuse
14. Boston
The 1998 Division alignment will be as follows:
Paterno Division: Boston Wildcats, New York Griffons, Big Carolina Bang, Keystone Longfellows, Mission Viejo Impossibles.
Cappelletti Division: Syracuse Blizzard, NIKEtown Knights, Mercer Mustangs, Richmond Rattlin’ Raptors, New Denver 2x4s.
Engle Division: Wisconsin Cheeseheads, Miami Muffdivers, Dallas Armadillos, Newport Beach Nightmare.
