Lineup Submission of the Year

Keystone co-owner Terry Muth’s Week 17 lineup gets the year’s most creative lineup award:

Team: Keystone
Player1: manning(a.k.a. cindy crawford)
Player2: dillon(Julia Roberts)
Player3: williams(the big mama from Drew Carey)
Player4: rhett (Hale Berry)
Player5: schroeder(my sister)
Player6: dyson(my grandma)
Player7: chrebet(nancy kerrigan)
Player8: mare(cameron diaz -si !)
Note: the connection:

  1. while manning may not be #1 on a lot of lists right now, he’s definitely in everyones top 10…thus, Cindy.
  2. some weeks you want to put dillon on the trading block then suddenly he breaks through and you get a glimpse of his true talent…i.e.Julia
  3. Ricky should take his helmet off once in a while and give it to her to put on.
  4. for a mid round pick he did o.k. Hale Berry is mid-round or better in any FBL league.
  5. having Bill on your team is like kissing your sister – 2 points,5 if your lucky – yippeee.
  6. Dyson -my grandma could’ve scored more than him and she’s been singing the halleluiah chorus for 25 years.
  7. what did I expect with a bum leg.
  8. mare-came outa nowhere to add some Latin pizzazz to an otherwise dull team.

**expert analysis – a few keepers, we’ll put the big mama on a diet and underneath that circus tent there’s a babe waiting to unmask herself next season.

Week 17 Quotables:

I can’t believe you let Nick win. You disappointed us, Ying. — Nearly every FFL owner and ex-FFL owner Ying has spoken to since the Fantasy Bowl.

Griffins Are Greatest; Beat Wildcats in Fantasy Bowl VIII

New York’s fifth trip to the Fantasy Bowl proved to be the charm, as the Griffins got huge games from Brad Johnson (30 pts) and Marshall Faulk (25 pts) en route to an 87-71½ win over the Boston Wildcats in Fantasy Bowl VIII.

Both the Griffins and the Wildcats easily bested the highest point total ever posted in a Fantasy Bowl (62) and the Wildcats’ 71 points in a losing effort will likely be a record that stands for many years.

Griffins owner Nick Fisher would not predict victory going into the Monday night contest, as the Griffins have been torched in previous Fantasy Bowls by big Monday night performances.

Wildcats owner Ron Yeany was very happy with his team’s performance, and said there wasn’t much more he could have done to overcome a Griffin team that put a hot streak together to end the season. “Nick has consistently fielded the best team in the league year in and year out, and I’m happy he’s finally captured a championship.”

“Given the fact that the Griffins lost RB Terrell Davis early in the year, Fisher will easily walk away with Coach of the Year honors,” Yeany added.

Fisher’s closest competitor in Coach of the Year honors will likely be Jim Waugh and Phil Dellorso, who guided the perenially underachieving Mercer Mustangs to the league’s best regular season record and a 61½-54 win over Graynbald Mud to capture third place.

The Consolation Bowl was the week’s closest contest, and the Miami Muffdivers, for the second week in a row, benefitted from the home field advantage to edge the New Denver 2x4s 51½-49 to capture the consolation bracket crown.

Week 17 will continue the highly-contested battle for the points race, with Graynbald, New York and Boston all in striking distance of the overall points crown. Going into the final weekend, only 25 points separate these 3 teams:
Graynbald Mud: 873 points
New York Griffins: 864 points
Boston Wildcats: 848 points

Week 16 Quotables:

Eggo, We’ll send you back your Santa hat if you win this weekend (otherwise it remains hostage until you visit NJ again!). — Jeanne & Mike White (New Denver co-owners).

Richmond’s lineup for the week: Joe Namath, Gale Sayers, Kevin Mack, Walter Payton, Fred Bilitnicough (sic), Lynn Swann, Don Maynard, George Blanda. Note: We look good on paper, anyway. — Richmond owner Chris Lieberman

Week 13 Notes

Mustangs, Wildcats clinch

The Mercer Mustangs and the Boston Wildcats clinched division titles this week. The race for the Paterno Division will come down to the wire, with New YorkKeystone and Newport Beach all having a shot to win the division.

The Griffins (8-5) can clinch the division championship with a win against Newport Beach (7-6) this week. The Griffins must win to capture the division title. Keystone (7-6) can win the division if the Longfellows win and the Griffins lose. Newport Beach will capture the division if they beat the Griffins AND Keystone loses to Richmond.

The wildcard race will be hotly contested. GraynbaldMiami, and New Denver are all tied at 8-5 going into the final week, and none of them play head-to-head matchups, so they all could finish tied for the wildcard.

New Denver, with head-to-head wins over both Graynbald and Miami, control their own fate. A win this week puts the 2x4s in as the wildcard. Graynbald and Miami split their season series and currently have identical division records, which means a 3rd or 4th tiebreaker could come into play.

Should all 3 of those teams lose this week, it could open the door for the 2nd place team in the Paterno Division to sneak in as the wildcard.

There is also an extreme outside possibility of Dallas (7-6) sneaking in as the wildcard team, but this scenario is highly unlikely.

For the consolation playoffs, only the teams mentioned above that do not make the top-tier playoffs will be eligible.

Week 13 Quotables:

Will all you guys tell your players to stop hurting my players. Lets keep it clean. No more injuries. — Graynbald co-owner Ronnie Feldman.

No more moving during the FFL season Ying!. — Mission Viejo owner Ross Hessler.

Second time this year that I had the second highest score, and lost. — New York owner Nick Fisher

Boy- I sure could have used M. Brunnell eitther of the last 2 weeks to help in my playoff and points run. — New York owner Nick Fisher

If my defense wasn’t so bad, I might still be in this thing. — Mission Viejo owner Ross Hessler.

Here’s a recent photo of Sladic (New Denver co-owner) when he came to visit us with the new baby — maybe you can do something with it for me —- like put it on the FFL thingee or something like that for everyone to look at … I’d appreciate it. He just looks so darn comfortable. Some guest!!!! — Donna Zilberfarb, wife of Frelinghuysen owner Dave Zilberfarb.

Week 11 Notes

Is just another doormat on the armadillos road to destiny — Dallas owner Paul Gilgallon.

Dan, we think our Johnsons are better than yours! So much so, we’ll only use one of them today. Good Luck! — Mike & Rich (White and Sladic) New Denver co-owners.

Week 10 Notes

Will the spreadsheet help me win games? — Richmond owner Chris Lieberman.
Your answer Nibs — NO.

Why did the football coach go to the bank? . . . To get his quarter back. — Olivia Muth, daughter of Keystone co-owner Terry Muth.

Go Boston, beat GBM. — Mercer co-owner Jim Waugh. Ed’s Note: Sorry, Waugh. Doesn’t look good.

Week 9 Notes

Paul’s team is a thorn in the side of the Wildcats. (Ying is now 3-5 lifetime against Paul) — Boston owner Ron Yeany

Cleve – I always knew that you were filled with integrity. Thanks – tm. —Keystone co-owner Terry Muth.

My johnsons might be long and distiguished but I sure wish they got a little more action. — Newport Beach owner Dan Callahan

Theres nothing left to say. — Syracuse owner Doug Weaver ED’S NOTE: Not sure if Cleave is talking about the Blizzard or the Nittany Lions, but they both fit the comment.

Week 8 Notes

I’m back with the Cellar Dwellars again … can I just play Clev and Zilb the rest of the season ? Throw in Banger’s team on my revised loser-schedule too. —Richmond owner Chris Lieberman.

Looks like the miami squad already covered the dumpers pre-season over/under of 4 wins. can’t remember whether he took me up on next years league dues. do you remember nick?? — Miami owner Pat Landy

Week 7 Notes

Kudos from Week 6…

I forgot to point out last week that we had a record-setting performance. Keystone Longfellow kicker Olindo Mare set the all-time FFL high for a kicker: 23 points. The previous high was 22, held by John Carney (Miami Muffdivers — 1993) and Jeff Wilkins (Keystone Longfellows– 1996).

Did You Notice…

One week after New York scored the second highest points for the week and lost (to Keystone) … the same thing happened to Keystone this week (lost to Syracuse with 2nd highest points).

Week 7 Quotables:

Cleave, we’ve now sunk to the lowest depths imaginable — Nibs is giving US shit!!! — Frelinghuysen owner Dave Zilberfarb.

This week I’m starting exactly one guy that was also in my starting lineup in Week 1. The world as I knew it has been turned upside down – Zilber’s team (whatver the name is), Syracuse and Carolina suck; Dallas, Keystone and Miami are good. Can I get a refund of my annual dues? — Carolina owner Wayne Rupert

Although I was thoroughly beaten by Eggo’s surprisingly upstart Miami squad, I would like everyone to know that I can still beat him in Caps. This week is a rematch of last years FFL Bowl as The “MUD” take on Nick’s universally hated New York Squad. Should be a good one. — Graynbald co-owner Ronnie Feldman

Banger’s sooooo lucky…has there ever been a game so low scoring ?(16-14) I think it’s the kid thing taking effect. Make sure you put us on the record page for lowest scoring game…total points…. where both teams needed to win. —Richmond owner Chris Lieberman

Week 6 Notes

We suck. — Syracuse owner Doug Weaver.

I can’t believe that the Frog Team (Zilb) and Blizzard (Clev) teams are that bad … Christ, I even got 2 wins already. Is there a law against these two teams battling it out for the Cellar Dwellar trophy? — Richmond owner Chris Lieberman.

Week 5 Notes

I felt so bad for Nick for not playing Brad Johnson last week that I told him it was o.k. with me if he played him this week…I sincerely believe in promoting good fellowship among the owners. — Keystone co-owner Terry Muth

I see Syracuse is using the old Mission Viejo strategy of falling behind early to get the best additions. I miscalculated in thinking that 1-3 would be bad enough (to add Az-Zahir Hakim). Good work Cleve! — Mission Viejo owner Ross Hessler

Week 4 Notes

FFF received this letter from Nightmare owner Dan Callahan today:

Ying this FFL stuff is great. I haven’t had an opportunity to speak with my friends Cleave and Crowley in some time, it was very enjoyable. I would like to thank the powers that be that scheduled my good friends two weeks in a row. It gives me added incentive to get out of bed on Sunday.

At this time I would like to petition the league about a fairly sensitive matter. This league is supposed to promote friendship and allow people who really like each other to stay in touch. With that said I believe the league should remove GBM, NYG, and BOS off my schedule and replace them with SYR. Let’s be honest I don’t like Nick, Ronnie or yourself. Why should I play you? I am sure the league will honor my request so I would like to thank you in advance.

Newport Nightmare
Dan Callahan

Week 3 Notes

DID YOU NOTICE:

  • You may think the Broncos, Jets and Falcons are feeling bad at 0-3? Our own FFL owners Dave Zilberfarb and Doug Weaver can relate — their FFL franchises are the only 0-3 teams in the league. These owners account for 2 past championships (Zilb in 94,95) and 4 Fantasy Bowl appearances (the league is currently in it’s 8th year).
  • Is it a first? — With Syracuse and Keystone tied going into the Monday night game, the Blizzard had Jake Plummer while the Longfellows countered with Adrian Murrell. Final tallies: Murrell (0) and Plummer (-2). This is the first time in my recollection that a team has ever lost a game by having a player lose points on Monday night. If it’s happened before, let me know the year/teams and I’ll search for it.

Week 2 Notes

Did you notice…

  • New York and Carolina are both 2-0, scoring a total of 73 points each through the first two weeks. The Keystone Longfellows have scored 90 points, and the Frelinghuysen Frog Lickers 95 points, and both those teams are 0-2.
  • Syracuse Blizzard QB Jake Plummer (Cardinals) tied the all-time worst record this week for a single performance by a QB: negative 4 points.

1999 Pre-Season Predictions

DRAFT ANALYSIS
by Mayberry Sports Bureau

(forwarded to FFF from one of our esteemed owners)

Worst Move NDV trading out of the #2 position in the first round, thus, losing Edgerrin James and ending up with Terry Kirby and some crummy draft pick. Terry Kirby was drafted in the first round years ago and he has sucked since. Oh!, I know! Now that he is on an expansion team he will be better.

Best Move MVO (see worst move above). James will be FFL Rookie of the Year.

Worst Draft Pick RMD – James Stewart – 2d round – enough said.

Best draft picks each round

  1. Besides the obvious Williams and James- Stephen Davis, MER. Surprising to see that Mercer realized that he has won the starting job on an improving Skins team.
  2. JJ Stokes, NDV. Assuming Young stays healthy and Rice continues to see less action, he could blossom. (In addition, CAR was really peeved that he was taken from them)
  3. Derrick Alexander, CAR. Really came on strong in second half o last year and Rison is on the decline.
  4. Kimble Anders, MER. Another instance of MER being on the ball since Anders is starting over Bam Morris.
  5. Donovan McNabb, NYG. Future superstar is Eagles ever get him any help. (Again, CAR was so peeved that they lost their concentration and the draft went to hell)
  6. Corey Bradford, SYR. Received maybe too much hype as an up-and-comer, but if Schroeder falters this guy has a bright future.
  7. Tony Gonzalez, NPB. Excellent value, provided his knee is OK.
  8. Albert Connell, DAL. Could put up some points if Johnson stays healthy and Westbrook draws most of the attention.
  9. Jacquez Green, MVO. Great big play potential for a 9th round pick.

Team Grades:

  • Keystone – A. Anytime you add a RB like Williams your draft is good. Good WR picks (other than Troy Edwards) and good picks with Aikman and Charles Way.
  • MVO – B. See James above. However, other than Jacquez Green in the 9th the rest of the draft pretty much sucked. Would be a F without James.
  • NDV – C. Selection of Stokes and Kitna/Couch combo partially redeemed lousy 1st round move. Maybe JJ Johnson is the future in Miami?
  • Miami – B. Like Torry Holt a lot and additional handful of good potential WRs. Same problem as last year – no depth at RB unless Wheatley surprises.
  • Mercer – B. A surprisingly decent draft from a notoriously bad team. IN addition to Stephen Davis and Kimble Anders, got Jermaine Lewis (great potential IF healthy), Ike Hilliard (breakout yr?), Tavian Banks (3rd down and backup RB for great offense) and Richard Huntley (good pick if Bettis can’t play).
  • NPB – C. Other than Ahman Green, Kevin Johnson and Tony Gonzalez, there are some serious questions. Obviously hoping that Atlanta repeats last year’s success, but I suspect that it was a fluke because Chandler will get hurt and there is no Tony Martin to take attention away from Mathis.
  • Dallas – D. Simply the worst draft. First 2 picks were Carolina Panthers who have the worst OL in the NFL. Muhammed might be OK because Carolina will always be behind. Shawn Jefferson will be supplanted by Tony Simmons and Chris Warren is over-the-hill. Would have been a F without Muhammed and Connell.
  • Syracuse – A-. Despite twice attempting to draft protected players, nice job of filling 2 spots behind Jamaal Anderson. Kevin Faulk, Leroy Hoard, Greg Hill and 2 TE’s might do the trick. Going to have to wait for good prospect WRs (Bradford and Peerless Price) to fill #3 WR slot.
  • CAR – B-. Clearly looking to the future with risky first two picks on rookies – Cecil Collins and David Boston. Solid WRs (Alexander, Curtis Conway and Dedric Ward) in the middle, but everything went sucked after that considering Rashaan Salaam was cut and Dildo is the backup QB.
  • FFL – B-. Pretty strong WRs with Frank Sanders, Rae Carruth (although 2nd round was too high), Bobby Engram and Leslie Shepherd, but went way too high with Grammatica and Kerry Collins.
  • NYG – B. An A if first round risks (Lawrence Phillips and Isaac Bruce) pan out. Darnay Scott and Sean Dawkins were solid picks and McNabb is an excellent prospect. Bad pick with Andre Rison is second round – he is in a serious downhill slide.
  • BOS – C. The schizo draft – lousy geriatric picks (Terry Allen, Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas) and prospects that were drafted too high (Ron Rivers, Cade McNown, Hines Ward). Good comeback candidates picks, though, with Yancey Thigpen and Eddie Kennison.
  • GBN – B-. Good picks with Michael Westbrook (primed for a big year?) and Ricky Dudley (nicely fills a hole on a good team). After these two went too high with EG Green, Larry Centers and Fred Lane.
  • RMD – D+. Another Nibs disaster, although not as bad as Dallas. Brian Griese may turn out well and Leon Johnson and Bert Emmanuel were good picks.

Let the games begin!

Preseason predictions: The software we use to run our draft has point projections for this year, based on best available players each week with all our starting lineup rules. Here’s how the preseason predictions look for total points for 1999:
