It’s A Two Tier Year

Just out of curiosity I calculated average per-team scores through week 11, and it clearly shows what the records and points standings indicate — a few high-performing teams, and a clear drop-off to a solid pack of everyone else. Most years there is usually a bigger pack *in the middle* as we reach the trade deadline. This year we don’t have a middle pack.

Trade Deadline Update

Kickoff week 12 is the trade deadline, so let’s take a quick look at where things stand. Remember, 1) no trades after kickoff this week, 2) protected players next year must be on a roster before the trade deadline, and 3) drop/add reverts to first-come, first-serve after week 12 game kickoffs.

It might seem scoring is up this year, but overall the per-team/per-week average score so far this year is 69.1 — only slightly above last season’s 68.5.

What we have been seeing, however, are some huge games by a handful of teams. The Froglickers are nearly 100 points out in front of anyone else and have the top QB (Lamar Jackson), top RB (Derrick Henry) and top WR (Ja’Marr Chase), who are also 1-2-4 on the list of highest scoring players overall. The Froglickers (thrice), Blowfish and Wildcats (twice each) have multiple 100+ point weeks this year, while all other teams combined only have one 100+ point week (Mercer, wk 5).

The playoff races are tight with ties across the top of all three divisions.

Two heavyweights are fighting it out in the Paterno Division with the Froglickers and the Mud both 8-2. Chicago holds the tiebreaker via a head-to-head (98.5 – 87) win in week 4. Both teams are nearly assured of playoff spots at this point.

Two more heavyweights are fighting it out in the Engle Division with the Wildcats and the Blowfish both 7-3. Connecticut holds the tiebreaker there via a head-to-head (90.5 – 65) win in week 8. New Chester at 6-5 and Mercer at 5-6 can’t be counted out yet but seem destined to be battling it out for a wild card slot.

Last (and, yes, also least this year) is the Cappelletti Division where Dallas and Miami are tied for the division lead with 5-5 records. Dallas and Miami face off in week 12 for what could be the tiebreaker to decide the division.

Quick Review and Deadline Reminders

Week 9 is upon us and the trade deadline is 3 weeks away so let’s quickly update and review upcoming deadlines.

The Froglickers and Mud are both 6-1 and tied atop the Paterno Division, with the Mud holding the tiebreaker via their head-to-head win over the Froglickers in week 4. The Wildcats (5-3) lead the Engle Divison with the Blowfish (4-3) and the Mustangs (4-4) just a game back. In the Cappelletti Divison, the Armadillos (4-3) are the lone team with a winning record.

Three division winners and top three wildcards will make the playoffs, which occur weeks 15-17 of the NFL schedule.

In the points race, the Froglickers currently lead the Wildcats by 7 points. The Mud (-64) and Blowfish (-70.5) are the only other teams less than 100 points back.

Kickoff week 12 is the trade deadline, which is the milestone for a few things:

  • Trades – no trades after kickoff week 12
  • Protection cutoff – players added to a roster after week 12 are not eligible for protection for 2025 season
  • Waivers end – the drop/add process returns to first-come, first-serve after kickoff 12. Reminder that both players involved in a transaction must have completed their games for the week before dropped or added.

Other deadline reminders:

  • DROP/ADD deadline for Running Backs and all Receivers is kickoff week 15.
  • DROP/ADD deadline for Quarterbacks and Kickers is kickoff week 17.

As we wrap up week 1 and begin the head-to-head games next week, I wanted to share the typical reminder for common questions/issues that come up each season.

  • Transactions are first-come, first-serve until after kickoff week 3 at which point waivers begin.
  • A player’s team must have completed their game for the current week before they can be added/dropped/IR’d
  • A player added must remain on your active roster for at least one week
  • A player placed on IR must remain on IR for at least one week
  • A player on IR who is active in a game (catch/carry/pass/kick) must be activated off IR before his team’s next game
  • Waivers are 9pm TUE nights (starting wk 3); transactions are first-come, first-serve after the waiver deadline and before any transacted player’s next game begins.

CBS “locks” rosters each week while games are played so I cannot record transactions on CBS until they reset for the next week. Submitted transactions at any time are time/date stamped in CBS so time/date can be applied when necessary.

And as always text/email/call me with any questions.

Season Wrap-Up

by Nick

For the first time ever Ron F. won the points championship; however, this franchise did win a points championship once previously, in 1992 our inaugural season as the LA Riot (owner Sam McClain)

DAL came close (second in points and runner-up of FFL Bowl) but failed in its bid to be the first ever franchise to three-peat for either crown.

KEY (Ver) ends up with the second worst winning percentage ever. NCT (Mike/Rich) was 0-14 in 2004. The only other 1-win team (1-11) was OCD (Dan/Ross) in 2016.

Ver and Dan seemed to have swapped their fortunes/mis-fortunes as:

KEY had the biggest drops in total points (from 5th place to 13th) and total wins (from 8 to 1), while OCD saw the biggest increases in both categories; from 13th to 5th in points and from 3 wins to 8 wins.

Dan had the first draft pick last two seasons. Now Terry has pick one upcoming.

OCD also had its first winning season since 2012. This snapped a franchise record ten consecutive seasons of futility and was one season shy of the league mark still owned by FFL (Zilb) at eleven consecutive non-winning seasons (2010-2020)

Only Ron F (CHI) and Doug (BOX) have had winning records for four consecutive seasons.

HVV (Trz/Chris/Jeff) has three consecutive seasons with a losing record. No other team has more than two currently.

Five straight seasons now that CTW (Ron Y.) has not been in the money.

First time all teams scored over 1000 points, though interestingly we had the lowest average point total per week per team since the PPR era began in 2020.

Injuries hit hard this season leading to the most ever money spent on transactions $671, eclipsed the previous record of $622 set in 2017.

SPECIAL THANKS:
As always Special thanks to Ying for running the draft and website and to Trz for keeping the weekly Excel spreadsheets
