Game recaps by CBS Fantasy Football AI Sports Reporters
Coach Jim Waugh outsmarted the experts to give his team the win over Connecticut Wildcats. That plus a crushing loss for Orange Co. Beach Dudes in this week’s ‘Around the League’ report.
Making the Moves
Coach Waugh and Nico Collins deliver victory to Mercer Mustangs
If Coach Ron Yeany was looking for a little excitement in this game after last week’s blowout he certainly got it (but probably didn’t enjoy it). Connecticut Wildcats lost a tight one against Mercer Mustangs, 72.5 to 69. Losing by only 3.5 points, Connecticut Wildcats suffered the closest loss this week.
The win gets Mercer Mustangs back above .500 at 5 – 4. The loss drops Connecticut Wildcats’ record to an identical 5 – 4.
Coach Jim Waugh didn’t rely on his All-Stars to pull this one out, instead getting contributions from unexpected quarters. Jaxson Dart scored 20 points, Tyler Allgeier got 16, and Zach Charbonnet dropped 12. Allgeier’s 16 points represent the most he’s had this year (good timing, given the score). He was a short yardage machine this week, punching in not one but two TDs from the 1 yard line.
Meanwhile, Jalen Hurts hadn’t dropped the ball for Connecticut Wildcats since week two’s stinker. Well, that run has come to an end. Hurts was part of a three man group of troublemakers, teaming up with Eddy Pineiro and Demario Douglas to deliver 8 points. Hurts’ 6 points made him the worst starter on his team for the 2nd time this season.
On the coaching front, the difference in tactical skill showed this week. Coach Yeany could have won this game with the right lineup. Perhaps scared off by Zonovan Knight’s 2 point performance last week, Coach Yeany left him on the bench in favor of Demario Douglas, despite the experts’ prediction that Knight should have played.
This decision cost Connecticut Wildcats a total of 0.5 points. If Coach Yeany had left Demario Douglas on the bench and also started Matthew Stafford, Connecticut Wildcats would have won the game.
Coach Waugh’s lineup decisions were critical to this week’s success. He left Bo Nix and his 14.9 expected points on the bench, favoring Jaxson Dart (10.1 points expected).
This great decision boosted Mercer Mustangs’ final score by 17 points, which was the difference in the game. With those additional points, Coach Waugh is now the best game-day coach in the league, passing Coach Wayne rupert.
Come on guys…
42.5 points from Jonathan Taylor were not enough as Chicago Mud falls
De’Von Achane has been coming through for Philadelphia Griffins all year, and this week was no different. Achane led the way as Philadelphia Griffins got the job done against Chicago Mud, winning 96.5 to 87. His 32 points topped all but one player this week. A good performance by Achane has been critical for Philadelphia Griffins this season, as they have gone 4 – 2 when he exceeds his expectations, and 1 – 3 when he doesn’t.
Philadelphia Griffins also got a better-than-expected performance from Jared Goff, who beat his projections by 5.2 points. Goff threw for 320 yards and a trio of touchdowns as Detroit scored on every drive on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Coach Ronnie Feldman will find no easy scapegoat for this week’s loss. Chicago Mud had five underperformers, with Michael Pittman (1 point) being the worst. Pittman’s performance ended a three game streak of beating the experts’ projections.
The three overperformers on Coach Feldman’s squad did their part to balance things out (and then some). Jonathan Taylor was the best of them, scoring 42.5 points. Taylor set the new high mark for all players this season with that performance.
The win evens up Philadelphia Griffins’ record at 5 – 5. Chicago Mud are now 6 – 3 after suffering their first back-to-back losses of the season.
Just Get Out of the Way
Jahmyr Gibbs helps give Big Oregon Bang an easy win this week
This game was expected to be close. Big Oregon Bang found those expectations insulting. They gave Orange Co. Beach Dudes a 120.5 to 77.5 drubbing. Big Oregon Bang not only got the win, but posted the 2nd highest scoring game of the year.
The win brings Big Oregon Bang to 5 – 4, and sends them to the top of our internal power rankings. The loss drops Orange Co. Beach Dudes’ record to 5 – 5.
After coming up with all of 3 points last week, Jahmyr Gibbs came up clutch this week. Gibbs was the clear leader on Big Oregon Bang, posting 31.5 points. It’s just another day at the office for Gibbs, who has led Big Oregon Bang more times than any other player.
Meanwhile, Courtland Sutton stuck out as the worst performer for Orange Co. Beach Dudes, producing only 1.5 points. Coaches dan callahan and Ross Hessler have to be used to bad scores from Sutton, who has been the worst performer on Orange Co. Beach Dudes more times than any other player.
On the coaching front, this game showed how futile efforts can sometimes be. Big Oregon Bang won this game despite, rather than because of, Coach Wayne rupert’s lineup moves. He started Jordan Addison instead of Troy Franklin, despite the experts’ prediction that Franklin should have played.
This decision took a 8 point chunk out of Big Oregon Bang’s final score, which–thankfully for Coach Rupert–didn’t matter much this game. Coach Rupert’s decisions this week did cost him his title as the best gameday coach in the league (Coach Jim Waugh wears the crown now).
As for Coaches dan callahan and Ross Hessler, their lineup decisions earned their team points last week, and did again this week. They went with Jacoby Brissett and Wan’Dale Robinson over the higher ranked Trevor Lawrence and Keenan Allen. These decisions gave Orange Co. Beach Dudes a nice 13 point bonus.
Taking the Reins
Frelinghuysen Froglickers gets a big effort from Jaxon Smith-Njigba this week
Frelinghuysen Froglickers got this win with a little bit in reserve, earning a 63 to 53 victory over Boxboro Blowfish. Frelinghuysen Froglickers got a fairly lucky victory, winning with the 4th lowest point total in the league this week.
The loss is the 3rd straight for Boxboro Blowfish, putting their record at 3 – 6. The win brings Frelinghuysen Froglickers to 6 – 3.
Frelinghuysen Froglickers had a three-man strike force with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, DeVonta Smith, and Tyler Warren combining for 35.5 points. Smith-Njigba has now gone five weeks without dipping below the average wide receiver’s points. The hot streak has left him as the best wide receiver in the league.
Meanwhile, Boxboro Blowfish’s troubles were largely due to having developed an allergy to the end zone. All their starters combining for only one touchdown. No other team scored fewer TDs this week.
Both teams face trouble in the upcoming schedule. It was important for Frelinghuysen Froglickers to get the victory this week, as Boxboro Blowfish will be the easiest game they will face for a while. The next three games are against winning teams, starting with Connecticut Wildcats next week.
Meanwhile, Boxboro Blowfish will be playing Mercer Mustangs. The game ought to be quite the strategic battle as it will feature the best gameday coaches in the league so far.
End of the Line
Miami Muffdivers can’t extend their winning streak past George Kittle and New Chester Thorobreds
After knocking Miami Muffdivers out of the playoffs last year, you might expect New Chester Thorobreds to give ’em a break this week. Well, they didn’t. New Chester Thorobreds slid by Miami Muffdivers, winning 66.5 to 60.5. The win helped New Chester Thorobreds halt Miami Muffdivers’ five game winning streak.
The win brings New Chester Thorobreds’ record to 4 – 5, while dropping Miami Muffdivers to 6 – 3.
New Chester Thorobreds, who were a 8 point underdog coming into the game, did a decent job during Sunday’s main action. They were powered by George Kittle, who scored 15.5 points. That gave him the most points on New Chester Thorobreds for the first time this season.
Meanwhile, Miami Muffdivers decided the whole ‘scoring points’ thing was passe. Sam Darnold didn’t exactly light it up, coming up with only 3 points.
Miami Muffdivers also had to deal with a poor effort from James Cook (8.2 points below expected). Cook fell farther short of his expected points than any other player this week.
Going into Sunday night, Miami Muffdivers were in a really tough spot. Coach Pat landy needed Chris Boswell and Ladd McConkey to come up with 27 points. Boswell and McConkey gave it a good effort, but their 21 points weren’t enough.
Working It
Trey McBride’s 19.5 points sinks Dallas Armadillos
It’s probably been tough for Coaches Paul Gilgallon and Sam McClain to stay awake while following their recent games. The last two games have been blowouts, and this week was just more of the same. Dallas Armadillos got beat down by Keystone Longfellows, losing 74 to 50.5. The 50.5 points that Dallas Armadillos scored were the fewest they scored this year.
The loss drops Dallas Armadillos’ record to 4 – 6, while the win brings Keystone Longfellows to 4 – 5.
Keystone Longfellows were led by the trio of Trey McBride, Jameson Williams, and Jason Myers, who combined for 70% of their team’s points. McBride alone scored 19.5 points, which were the most that any tight end collected this week. He had to beat multiple defenders to extend his streak of games with a touchdown to four.
Meanwhile, Jordan Mason and Oronde Gadsden II were both working off the same playbook this week, putting up only 1.5 points for Dallas Armadillos. Gadsden II is in the midst of a troubling sequence, having seen his point total fall every week for the last three weeks.
Coach Terry Muth cannot be happy with how their team has played this season, but they have to be enjoying the recent turnaround, having won the past 2 games. They’ll hope to keep that momentum going into next week’s matchup with Philadelphia Griffins. As for Dallas Armadillos, they will square off against New Chester Thorobreds.
No points for Violence in bye week
Happy Valley is not so happy after yet another down week. They find themselves at the bottom of the league standings, and with 44.5 points had the low score of the week; thus failing to gain any scoring-based points during their bye week.
