Week 8 Recap

by CBS Fantasy Journalist

Miami Muffdivers won their 6th in a row, while Orange Co. Beach Dudes took yet another hit to the loss column. That plus a crushing loss for Mercer Mustangs in this week’s ‘Around the League’ report.

Relief

Coach Ronnie Feldman really needed someone to lend him a hand and help end his four game losing streak. Coach Jim Waugh was only too happy to help. Chicago Mud destroyed Mercer Mustangs, winning 92 to 43.5. Blowouts are typical for these teams these days, as both of them were in blowouts last week as well.

The win brings Chicago Mud’s record to 2 – 5, while dropping Mercer Mustangs to 1 – 6.

Tyreek Hill has been coming through for Chicago Mud all year, and this week was no different. The Cheetah joined up with Tua Tagovailoa to score 46 points. Hill’s performance early on Sunday took him from the 5th best wide receiver to the 3rd best wide receiver in the league. He earned 188 receiving yards on Sunday, making it his fourth this season with over 160 (the rest of the NFL combined only has 5).

Meanwhile, the loss for Mercer Mustangs came down to a pretty simple factor: they didn’t go anywhere. Collectively, they only managed to gain 261 yards rushing and receiving. No other team gained fewer total yards this week.

These teams will see a difference in the quality of their upcoming opponents. Next week, Chicago Mud will be playing Miami Muffdivers. Bad timing for Chicago Mud, as Miami Muffdivers will come into the matchup on a six game winning streak. Miami Muffdivers brings in the best player in the league over the past three weeks: Joe Burrow.

Mercer Mustangs’ loss is a bad start to a very easy stretch on their schedule. The next three games are against less-than-impressive teams, starting with Connecticut Wildcats next week. Making things even easier, Connecticut Wildcats will be without Amari Cooper, who has a bye.

Come with me, if you want to win

Derrick Henry was expected to be the top performing RB this week, and that’s exactly what he was. Frelinghuysen Froglickers ended up on top against Keystone Longfellows, winning 98 to 82.5 behind 32.5 points from King Henry. That gave him the most points on Frelinghuysen Froglickers for the first time this season. He racked up 219 rushing yards and two touchdowns on Sunday, tying the record for most games with 200+ rushing yards (six, four of them against the Texans) in the process.

Nick Folk helped out as well, exceeding his projected point total by 13.7 points. Folk’s 20 points set the new high mark for all kickers this season.

Meanwhile, Keystone Longfellows suffered through poor performances from Evan McPherson, Gabe Davis, and Joe Mixon, who collectively managed only 4.5 points. McPherson scored -1 points, which were the fewest of any kicker this season, and marked the 4th straight game of underperforming his predicted points.

As far as good performances for Keystone Longfellows, Christian McCaffrey stuck out with 29 points. Quite an improvement from last week, when Run CMC scored only 3 points.

Frelinghuysen Froglickers are now 3 – 4 after picking up their first back-to-back wins of the season. The loss drops Keystone Longfellows’ record to 5 – 2 – 1.

Pick Six

This matchup was a heat check for both these squads. New Chester Thorobreds had scored the second most points of any team over the last three weeks, while Miami Muffdivers had scored the most points of any team. Miami Muffdivers were the team that rose up to the challenge.

Miami Muffdivers wound up with a solid victory against New Chester Thorobreds, winning 76 to 61.5. Miami Muffdivers have now won six games in a row, bringing their record to 7 – 1. The loss drops New Chester Thorobreds’ record to 5 – 2.

DeAndre Hopkins was the clear leader on Miami Muffdivers this week, totaling 24 points. Hopkins topped all but one wide receiver this week with that performance. He caught 12 of his 13 targets for 159 receiving yards on Sunday, plus this incredible one-handed touchdown snag.

Meanwhile, New Chester Thorobreds had plenty of duds in the loss. Damien Harris was the worst of a five man group of underperformers, producing only 3 points.(1) Harris has now failed to top the league average running back in three straight games.

Next week, New Chester Thorobreds will take on the 3 – 4 Philadelphia Griffins. Points were in short supply for that team this week, as they could only scrounge up 52 of them. New Chester Thorobreds will come into the next game having lost their last two. It’s a big change from two weeks ago, when New Chester Thorobreds had won their 5th game in a row.

Meanwhile, Miami Muffdivers will be playing Chicago Mud. Miami Muffdivers have now been an underdog in both the last two weeks, and won both times. Maybe they’ll get a bit more credit going into their next one.

Aaaaalvin!

After losing three straight games, Coaches Chris Paret, Jeffrey Ozarski, and John Trzeciak’s squad figured: ‘Why not another?’ Happy Valley Violence ended up pretty far behind in this one, losing 96.5 to 77.5 to Boxboro Blowfish.

The loss drops Happy Valley Violence to the last spot in the Cappelletti division at 3 – 5. The win was Boxboro Blowfish’s 3rd in their last four games, bringing their record to 5 – 2 – 1.

Alvin Kamara was the key contributor for Boxboro Blowfish, recording 32.5 points. That’s the most points that he’s scored so far this year. Kamara ended his touchdown drought in a big way on Sunday, earning his first touchdown this season with a three yard rush and going on to score two more through the air.

Meanwhile, Coaches Chris Paret, Jeffrey Ozarski, and John Trzeciak can look to Brian Robinson Jr. and Daniel Carlson when passing out blame for the loss. The two combined to score zero points. Carlson’s performance this week broke his six game streak of surpassing the league average.

Beat Down

Dallas Armadillos had a cool 80% winning percentage all-time against Orange Co. Beach Dudes, and Coaches Paul Gilgallon and Sam McClain delivered more pain this week. Dallas Armadillos pounded Orange Co. Beach Dudes into submission, winning 126.5 to 52. The 75 point margin that separated these teams represents the biggest blowout of the season so far.

The win gets Dallas Armadillos back above .500 at 4 – 3. Another defeat makes it five in a row for Orange Co. Beach Dudes, dropping their record to 2 – 6.

It’s not that hard to win when you have the league’s top performer for the week, and A.J. Brown was that player. Brown teamed up with D’Onta Foreman and Jaylen Waddle to provide 68% of Dallas Armadillos’ points. Brown himself scored 33 points, which were the 3rd most of any wide receiver this season. He caught six passes, three of which were for touchdowns, and he let the defense know after his third.

Meanwhile, Orange Co. Beach Dudes really lost this game as a team. They were brought down by six underperformers, the worst of whom was Trevor Lawrence (2 points).1 That’s the fewest points that he’s scored so far this year. He only earned 133 yards on Sunday (averaging 4.3 yards per attempt) and a single touchdown, but threw two interceptions, one of which cost them the game.

It was important for Dallas Armadillos to get the win over an easy opponent this week, as its next two games are against winning teams, starting with Keystone Longfellows next week. As for Orange Co. Beach Dudes, they will square off against Frelinghuysen Froglickers.

Carrying the Load

Connecticut Wildcats got past Philadelphia Griffins with points to spare, winning 70 to 52. The loss drops Philadelphia Griffins back below .500 at 3 – 4. The win brings Connecticut Wildcats to 3 – 5.

Connecticut Wildcats got a nice group performance in the win, as five players beat their positional averages. Amari Cooper was just a bit ahead of the others, scoring 17.5 points. Although Coach Ron Yeany got the win, he cannot have been happy with Daniel Jones’s performance this week. Jones failed to show up, scoring 2 points.

While Connecticut Wildcats had plenty of heroes in the victory, Philadelphia Griffins saw seven different players underperform, and while none of them particularly stuck out, Josh Jacobs and his 3 points was officially the worst. That was quite a falloff from last week, when he scored 31.5 points. He failed to score and earned less than 100 yards (54 total) on Sunday, the first time he’s missed either mark since Week 3.

A.J. Dillon added to Philadelphia Griffins’ troubles, scoring only 3.5 points. Underperforming is the new normal for Dillon, who has gone seven straight games without hitting his projected point total. Jakobi Meyers was the only player on the team that didn’t underperform, scoring 13.5 points.
